Sorrento to Rome or Naples to Rome

I was just wondering if anyone knew which is the quickest or cheapest journey?

We are unsure whether to stay in Sorrento or Naples, and our next destination will be Rome, so we wondered which would be more convienient?

Thanks

Sorrento to Rome by bus (Marozzi or Curreri) would be the cheapest (about 17€ per person). They only have early morning departures though (6am and 6:30am) except in summer when Marozzi adds an afternoon bus at 5pm. Which is more convenient to stay depends on what you plan to do while you are in the area. If you plan to visit coastal sites/towns (Amalfi, Positano, etc.) then Sorrento is closer/easier.

Naples to Rome is always going to be quicker and cheaper because it is geographically closer. By train, you need to change at Naples, by bus you'd have to drive past it.

I would base any decision on the following questions: How long will you be staying?, what do you wish to see?, how familiar are you with Italy ?

Sorrento is more touristy, but has easy access to Pompeii and Herculaneum by circumvesuviana and to the Amalfi coast by bus. Naples can be something of a culture shock - grimy, noisy, frenetic, but full of amazing sights if you can get past the facade.

Hi t,

From whence are you coming?
When will it be?
For how long?
What do you wish to do?
What is your budget?

There are high speed trains from Naples to Rome about twice an hour all day long. Journey takes 70min.

You can check schedules at www.trenitalia.com, the website for the Italian national RR.

We will be in either Naples or Sorrento for 2 nights. We do want to go to Pompeii whilst we are there?

How long does the bus take from Sorrento to Rome?

Thanks

The schedule is different on Sundays. Marozzi has no morning service but does have a 17:00 departure. Curreri has no service at all on Sundays.
