We will be in Sorrento in mid-May. I cannot find a website that gives ferry information for Sorrento to Positano at that time of year. Will the ferries be running? I thought we would go by bus from Sorrento to Positano and return by ferry. I have read that the return buses can get quite crowded, but perhaps that is later in the season? Any one have experience with this route - we would be going on either a Thurs or Friday - don't know if that makes any difference! Thanks!

JoanneH - on the site it has a banner running "service suspended" - I assume that is for the winter - so when does service resume, anyone know? Thanks!
Suec,
We went from Sorrento to Positano in June 2009.
We took an overnight train to Milan from Naples.
From Milan, Positano is about 1.30 hrs.
You can also get down to some other station before Milan, but that would come at 5 am. We didn't want to disturb our sleep.
Reached Milan at 7 am. We had booked T 4 Cochette.
Very comfortable and safe journey.
You arrive fresh, early in the morning and you save on travelling time of 1 day. Plus, you also save on 1 night hotel stay.
Positano is reallllly verrry beautiful.
The bus ride from S. margarita is very scenic.
Have fun!
We were there in early March and there were lots of people standing on the bus then, because it was full. You can either squash in with everyone else or wait for the next bus, which may also be full. You can't see the view as well if you're standing but you'll be fine. Italians don't do queueing so use your elbows

sue, my two sisters and their daughters will be in Sorrento the same time as you and are most interested in NOT riding a crowded bus back from Positano.
I found this information about the metro del mare ferry schedule. It appears it does run in spring beginning the end of April. I'm hoping the schedule for 2010 is similar. http://tinyurl.com/ye44yrg

Paragkash, I think you mean Portofino not Positano
Hi Sue,

Your hotel can give you the up-to-date schedule.
Enjoy your visit.
Highly recommend arriving in Positano by ferry. Then you can enjoy the "postcard" view. Of course, you could do the same on the Positano-Sorrento ferry in reverse, but the ferry was very easy and comfortable.
