Sorrento, Positano, Ravello

Suggestions on this plan......!

Staying for a week in Sorrento. Want to see the Amalfi Coast, probably by bus but may consider a guide.

If we take the bus how should far can we go? I understand you shouldn't get off as the next bus may be full!

We will spend another day in Positano, maybe take the boat from Sorrento.

How do you get to Ravello and how long does it take from Sorrento?

We love small towns, scenery, Italian pottery, walking/hiking and just being with the locals. Any suggestions for what to see with a Sorrento home base would be greatly appreciated!

There is lots of information on the AC on here. However, Sorrento is just off the the AC to the West and over the peninsula. If you intend to travel on the AC for most of the time, it's not the best base, whereas Positano or Amalfi probably are.

You don't say when you are going or whether you have reservations yet, so give a bit more info and we can make suggestions.

To get to Ravello, you go to Amalfi and take a bus or taxi. Total travel time from Sorrento is probably close to 1.5 hours. Amalfi is about 20+ minutes from Positano by bus or boat. And Positano is about 30 minutes from Sorrento.

I assume you're planning on day trips to Capri, Pompeii, and/or Naples. Otherwise, you should think about basing in Positano or Amalfi.

Hi!: In 2009 we were in the amalfi coast for one week, and another week in Rome. You can access my report at:
http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...1-to-oct-3.cfm
We were based in amalfi(and really happy with the choice); but also agree that Sorrento is a bigger place.
Ravello is easily doable from amalfi(some 20 minutes in bus).
Every place is gorgeous, so, you can't go wrong. We were very comfortsble using public transport for going everywhere, but tahat was in september.
Enjoy!!!

Any thoughts on staying in Positano versus Ravello? I was set on Positano but had dinner with some friends last night that actually preferred Ravello. Any thoughts (we're going to spend two nights and will day trip to the one we don't stay at).

If someone is a Ravello fan, any thoughts on high end hotels there?

Thanks

Ravello is more isolated so requires more transportation changes. If you are traveling by bus, Amalfi or Positano would be easier with Amalfi having more transport options than Positano.

I also agree that Positano would make a better base. I loved Ravello but it is rather remote. You catch the bus from Amalfi to Ravello and it's not a full-size bus. In late September when we travelled, the bus came and there was about 30-40 people waiting to get on. The poor locals pushed their way on otherwise they would never get home. I felt sorry that they had to endure that on a daily basis during tourist season. It must frustrate them to no end.

Positano to Amalfi is 25 minutes by Ferry. You can also catch the ferry from Positano to other coastal towns. Here is a useful link on ferry and Sita bus schedules:
