Sorrento or Sardinia?
I was able to extend our trip to Sicily from June 21st to July 19th instead of July 15th. Our last destination in Sicily is San Vito Lo Capo before flying out to Barcelona July 17th .
With 5 days should we try and go to Sardinia (never been) or just go to Sorrento (been twice, love it) or just stay in Sicily until the 17tth? Is Sardinia worth going for 5 days leaving San Vito a day early?
Itinerary is as follow...
Ortygia --> Taormina--> Aeolian Islands (Lipari) --->
Agrigento --> (side-trip to Piazza Armerina for Villa Romana del Casale on the way to Agrigento or back to Cefalu where husband arrives to meet us) -->
Agrigento/San Leone --> Palermo/Mondello --> San Vito Lo Capo --> Trapani last night
Option 1. July 13th Trapani (where we fly out to Barcelona)
Option 2. July 13th Trapani overnight ferry to Sorrento (flying out to BCN on Sunday 17th)
Option 3. July 14th Trapani to Sardenia until July 16th to fly out to BCN

Made a couple of mistakes, here is the real deal

Option 2. July 12th Trapani to Sardenia until July 16th or 17th to fly out to BCN
We have reservations in BCN for 2 nights before the 19th.

Naples/Sorrento or Sardinia could make sense if you are really interested in these places and IF YOU FLY TO BCN FROM THERE. You would waste too much time if you ha to fly back to Sicily before.
As I don't know your itinerary within Sicily (neither your interests), I cannot give any other advice.

Sicily is large and has lots to offer.
Sardinia is the favourite summer vacation spot for rich Romans who spend their time lounging at beaches, waterskiing etc. The island has not much to offer.
In a recent post I wrote (I had to be brief) "Sardinia is boring". Another Fodorite attacked me by writing "only anybody who has never been there can say that". But one sentence later he wrote "Sardinia is great for nature lovers" which is perfectly compatible with my very brief summary.
Did you see everything in the Sorrento area? Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ischia, Amalfi..?

"Traveller1959, Did you see everything in the Sorrento area? Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ischia, Amalfi..?"
We've not seen Ischia, but Capri, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Positano, Amalfi, as we've been there twice and we love Sorrento so much that we keep coming back.
I've been doing some research and out of Sardenia to Barcelona will be very expensive for the kids and I, so I'm now debating on staying longer in Sicily or going to Sorrento as originally planned.

Sardinia is exceptional. It's a big island so you need to choose where you explore. Most people choose a coastal base either in Alghero (west), Cagliari (south), or Palau/La Maddalena (north/northeast - also quite ritzy). There are fun things to see and do around all these bases and they all have great beaches nearby, something which Sicily, for all its wonder, is sorely lacking (in most areas).

Stay in Sicily. There's enough to see/do to spend a whole month, IMO."
I'm leaning on staying in Sicily or go to our love place Sorrento as originally planned, overnight ferry from Trapani to Naples the 13th. I believe Sardinia will have to wait, it would be very expensive to get in and out just for 4 days.
