Sorrento- in town or water views?
hi. We'll be in Sorrento early next May for five nights. Planning day trips to Capri, Pompeii and maybe a private car to tour Amalfi Coast. Three hotels have caught my eye. Antiche Mura in town and hotel Europa and Minerva both on the water. Has anyone stayed at theses places. ? I know Antiche Mura is most convenient and looks lovely but it's hard to pass up the terraces overlooking Bay of Naples! Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

DH and I stayed at this hotel in Sorrento:

Unlike the hotels you mention, it was high up. We had to rely on the hotel's jitney to take us to Sorrento proper. Although that was never a problem, and our views were insane, we could see how being right in town would be easier.
That being said, when we were catching the ferry for Capri, we saw elevators that appeared to be part of some of those hotels along the water and thought that would be really convenient.
Close to the train station on one side (for Pompeii), and an elevator ride to the water on the other (for Capri) definitely works for me! If any of your choices have elevators like that, my two cents is to consider it.

We stayed in Sorrento proper. It was a 5 minute maximum walk to anywhere. Since we used the hotel for sleep and breakfast, having a sea view was not inmportant. On the other hand, we have in the past stayed in hotels with magnicient views and enjoyed it. Only you can can decide on the relative value of convenience vs view. Although there are, if I remember correctly, that there arfe relatively central hotels that also have views, for a price.

We stayed in Sorrento on the edge of the cliff overlooking the Gulf of Naples. Our hotel, the Bellevue Syrene, had an elevator down to swimming piers at the base of the cliff.
So we were right in town but had a room overlooking the gulf (and a balcony hanging out over the edge).

I stayed at the Minerva several years ago. It is a bit less convenient, but so lovely. It was one of my all time favorite hotels. There are some rooms I would not like, but we had a private suite with two rooms and a magnificent private terrace with spectacular views over the Bay of Naples. It was gorgeous. It was kind of an accident that we got it - I could not afford that one now. Their own public terrace with a swimming pool is also lovely, especially for a drink on a warm evening. We ended up staying longer in Sorrento just because we wanted to hang out at the hotel.
I have stayed at two hotels right in town. Both were nice, but no comparison with the Minerva. I have also stayed at two hotels on the other side of town. One was fabulous, in some ways even better than the Minerva, but it is no longer there. The other was nice, but not spectacular.
My stay was not recent, but reviews for Minerva are still good. Location and views would still be the same - fantastic. Just check room location.
So, whether cost and less convenience is worth it depends on how much time you may have to relax and chill at your hotel.

We have stayed at a hotel in the center of town (the drive into the grounds opens from the main piazza) but the hotel has terraces and many room have balconies overlooking the bay of Naples. And there is a private elevator from the main hotel terrace down to the docks for the ferries and hydrofoils.
But, you get what you pay for and I don;t know the prices of the places you have mentioned.

No - we stayed at the Grand Excelsior Vittoria. May not be in the OPs budget but when we stayed - both times in May - we managed to get nice discounts.
Especially liked the lovely garden the hotel was in - lemon trees all over the place.

We stayed at Hotel Tramontano, which is only a few easy blocks from town. The hotel has many rooms overlooking The Bay of Naples, ours was one of them, and that view was a highlight of our trip. We loved coming back to it at the end of the day.

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful comments. After giving it thought, I've decided to book the Maison la Minervetta! Yes it's a little out of town but I think it will be worth it. It may not be Positano, but it looks amazing. Thanks again

Oh, you had asked about the Minerva, and I thought you meant Hotel Minerva up on Capo and that is what I gave info on. Had you asked or meant la Minervetta? I am confused.
I do not know the location of Maison la Minervetta, or the hotel, but the pics look amazing. Looks like a beautiful choice.

Actually I was originally referring to Hotel Minerva but I couldn't find any available rooms. Is it possible that it's sold out nine months in advance. I sent an inquiry to the hotel but I've received no response. Anyway, then I found la Minervetta...I think it's very close to Hotel Minerva

Yes, it is possible, many people reserve Minerva a year or more ahead. I have met a few people who have a standing reservation there for a few days every year. The only reason we got a room was a honeymoon couple cancelled the morning I called.
The hotel you got looks absolutely wonderful anyway. I think you will love it. The views are worth it.
