I am looking to book a hotel for a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 children) in Sorrento preferably close to the city and beach (late August). Can anyone recommend a good hotel with a pool that would be a good fit.We will be flying into Rome and also wonder whether we should rent a car from Rome or take a train to Sorrento and rely on public transport. We would like to travel around the area including Pompeii. Many thanks.

In the main area, it's more rocks and swimming piers (paid).
Sorrento doesn't actually have much of a beach - the same with most places on the Amalfi coast. Narrow bands of pebbles or stones often have fishing boast and other stuff cluttering it up. there are a few decent beaches, but some are private. Be sure of what you want and will get for the price. Also - you need to try to find a family room that will take so many people - not very common.
Train from Rome to Sorrento was easy and not expensive (got Mini fare to Naples, and the Circumvesuviana to Sorrento is cheap). Why drive? Sorrento and the coastal area is not that car-friendly. There are buses and trains and boats.
As for room for 5, try the search engines on Hotels.com and Booking.com and seee what pops up.
