Sorrento Accomodation - any gems?
A friend and I will be ending our 3 week trip in Sorrento from Sept 17-22nd, 2010. Sorrento will be a base to see the area including Capri, Pompei, Positanto ect. I am hoping to find a mix of a well situated, well priced ($90 - 115 eur) authentic place to stay. Can be any type....could you share some of your travel gems and any thoughts of what part of town (if it matters). I think it would be nice to have some type of view to end each day. Thanks!

I'm not sure of what you think of "authentic," but we really love La Tonnarella. It is still family owned and has the views you are seeking.

By the way... I just went to the link above and this appears to be a new website and while I did find the reservations section to be rather easy, I don't think all of your room options are listed. You may need to email them directly.

We loved the Antiche Mura in Sorrento. Great hotel, nice staff, and very convenient.

I'm not sure the above mentioned hotels will be the price you stated in September except for Casa Astarita. You might try Il Nido which is in the hills above Sorrento. They have a free shuttle to town (about 10 minutes). They are also on the local bus route. Great views from the restaurant and some rooms have balconies.

Il Nido is great - I think most rooms have balconies and the views are incredible. The restaurant there is very good - their breakfast buffet was quite extensive, and the shuttle to town is frequent and very convenient. We paid just 90 euros per night two years ago.

Agree with 'artsbabe'. The Hotel Antiche Mura is a good convienent place to stay. But it will probably be 150 euro with buffet breakfast. If arriving by train, it's just a few hundreds yards on the left. So, take the stairs after getting off the train and then walk down a slight grade, to the hotel. Easy with luggage. Richard

Mom23rugrats, would you recommend La Tonnarella for a family with 2 teenage boys or would be better booking a hotel with a pool. I noticed the hotel has a private beach. I was looking at the suite which I believe has 2 bedrooms. Thanks!

As it turns out we are going to stay at la meridiana, it has rave (recent) reviews and is in our price range of $117 euros. It is central and has a view deck. It seems to be the best of 'mid' for what we need. http://www.venere.com/hotels/sorrent...7,20100922,2,1
Thanks all - grazie!

Lovethecape - We took our children two summers ago when they were 10, 12 and 14. It was great to have the private beach and easy to access. Many hotels rely on hundreds of stairs to get you to their beaches, so that is a challenge!
We figured the kids can swim in a pool at home, but would have few chances to swim in the med!

Just came back last week and really liked where I stayed.. I will be writing a full report shortly but here's my review of the hotel:
Ulisse Deluxe Hostel: Via del Mare, 22 Sorrento, Tel.: +39 0818774753 http://www.ulissedeluxe.com/ E-mail: [email protected] per night 69€ double, plus 10€ breakfast, free wi-fi in the lobby( but not in the room), AC, Satellite TV with CNN, mini-bar. It’s considered a “deluxe hostel” rather than a hotel but the rooms are huge, very nice marble floors, nice wood furniture, etc, great bathroom with shower and Jacuzzi tub. The lobby and breakfast room are also huge, modern, nice. I think there are some “hostel” type rooms with bunk beds that are cheaper but all the areas we saw were certainly 3 star hotel quality. There is also a connected fitness center with pools, exercise rooms, etc but that is all extra. There is also a large parking garage, also extra. No view though (well you can see the ocean from the window but just barely). But for the price it was a great deal. Breakfast at 5€ per person was also a steal – far better than anything you could buy for 5€. Location a five minute walk from the old town with all the shops and restaurants. About 20 minutes walk from the train station. And the hotel organizes numerous excursions, we took the one to Capri that was not only a good deal financially but turned out to be one of our favorite experiences.
