The location is fairly good, it's near Nyhavn which is a very colorful area and it's not far from Amelienborg Palace and the changing of the guard. It was rennovated 3 or 4 years ago.
I had a street facing room and it was a little loud. My buddy had a non-street facing room and his view was crummy. The breakfast buffet is good and the rooms are OK.
I had a bad experience there which has soured me a little on the hotel . . . if you can't tell. THEY had my reservation arrival date wrong and even though it was clearly marked on the itinerary from my agency (which is what was faxed to them in advance) they insisted condescendingly that "Americans are always forgetting that there's a date change when flying from the US". I refused to pay for what they called was an extra day. As a result I cut my stay short and moved to the SAS Scandinavia where I got a less expensive rate for a larger, more modern room.
Having said all that, I think it's a pretty good value.

Thanks. I'm going in July. I was in Copenhagen many years ago and have some fond memories. I considered the SAS hotel but it looked like it was a little out of the way. I stayed in the the Nyhavn area when I was last in Copenhagen and it seemed great (to my much younger self). Are you saying the Sophie Amalie is a dump? Do you think I should consider staying somewhere else. I didn't want to stay near Tivoli or other touristy areas. Is that a mistake?
If you want to staynear Tivoli (five blocks) and are one of those more intelligent folks, like me, who can actually stay in a chain hotel and still manage to get in touch with local culture you might want to consider the Marriott which is fairly new and not in any way a "dump." But i would try to get it at a discount through discounthotel or priceline or whatever works. Stayed there last year..great location, etc. but up to you. Do not pay full price if you don't have to.
The best that I can say about the rooms is that they are OK. I'm just a little reluctant to call them dumpy.
For alternatives: I can tell you that I've stayed at the Nyhavn 71 and it is very nice. I've also stayed at the Neptune, in Nyhavn, which is hit and miss . . . I had a nice, large room once and a dumpy, small closet-style room there once. Near downtown, I've stayed at the Kong Frederick: nice rooms, dark paneling, old English-style hotel, and I've stayed at the Palace: loud, street facing room, jillions of tourist groups, ratty room (I asked to be moved and got a nice room).
I have also stayed at the Phoenix (the same hotel group owns the Nyhavn 71) and although it was a little "foofy" for my liking it was a nice room.
All of which brings me to something Bootman4u alluded to; I am fine with staying in a chain hotel (Radisson) and get my culture elsewhere. I stay at the SAS Scandinavia because I consistently get good service, a nice room - no surprises, and it's just not that far away from downtown to be inconvenient. I always rent a car in CPH and the SAS has a large parking lot.
I have also stayed at the Mariott that Bootman4u mentioned. It is new. Im not crazy about the location. I like the lobby bar at the SAS Scandinavia better and I like having the casino on site.
