Some of your Favorite Things in Naples, IT

We are in Naples for four days and thenone more at the end of our trip. I've read and collected some ideas from TRs and of course have a couple tour guidebooks. Would love to hear what some of your favorite things are about Naples, never spent anytime here before.

Well, you should go see the ruins of Pompeii. We loved that. And it is only a train ride away from Naples. And maybe a ferry ride over to Capri one day. An absolute gem of a restaurant for us was Trattoria La Tagliata in Positano if you are traveling along the Amalfi Coast at any point. Family run, very friendly and amazing food! http://www.latagliata.com/

May I be lazy?

Don't know what you'll like but these show places we've enjoyed - within, and near, Naples itself:

.... and in the surrounding area, easily doable as day trips:

For reasonably current what's on info and various listings, try this PDF magazine - usually issued bimonthly, and mostly bi-lingual - from the city's tourism people:

I do envy you the way Flickr does that - so clever!

And I think it's time we went back to Capodimonte, for the rooms that were shut during out visit...

In case you haven't seen it, here's a link to a trip report I did which started with a week in Naples - http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...alfi-coast.cfm.

There was so much to see in Naples itself that we never left the city, so we still didn't make it to Pompeii and had to return another time specifically to see Pompeii & Herculaneum. My single favourite thing was the catacombs of San Gennaro, followed by the Duomo & church of San Lorenzo each with their excavations underneath, the church & gallery of Pio Monte della Misercordia (with a very good Caravaggio) and MADRE.

I don't know when you are travelling but just in case - the Teatro San Carlo has apparently had airconditioning installed since we were there.

Thanks for all the suggestions and great pictures. We have been to the Amalfi coast several times and Pompeii before, so as Caroline did, we plan to stick to the city itself. You all have certainly given us some new places to try and c in Naples.
Caroline, thanks for your Tr, I may have missed it and will certainly read it tonight.

There are so many things to see and do in Naples. Don't miss:
The Archeological Museum
Capella Sansevero and its remarkable statuary
Sorbillo and its remarkable pizza
Santa Chiara cloisters
The Duomo
Certosa di San Martino

One of our most memorable activities was the Napoli Sotterranea (Subterranean Naples) tour... which might not be for everyone, but we found it fascinating.

Other notable sites for us included the Palazzo Reale, Piazza Plebiscito, Castel Nuovo and Castel dell'Ovo. But really, just walking around and exploring the heart of the city, Spaccanapoli, was the most memorable thing for us. It's nearly as gritty, crowded, loud and kinetic as old town in Hanoi, for better and for worse. Just dive in!

Here are some of our photos, to help you decide:

Last night as we wondered, thoughts of Hanoi flitted in my mind, with all the people, the noise and the scooters....thanks for some more great ideas.
