Some more train questions
If we book first class on a train, do we still handle our own luggage?
Are there assigned seats in first class?
Is it worth the extra money to book first class?

Yes, you lift your own luggage on and off the train, and keep an eye on it while in transit. They don't stow in in a baggage compartment.
Yes, there are assigned seats. That is the great benefit of first class.
Is it worth the extra money? For a long trip, of three hours plus, probably yes. For a short trip, no. That's my opinion. I love to travel by train in Europe! People-watching paradise! What is your itinerary?

For the Eurostar (ES) trains from Rome to Venice I don't think 1st class is worth the premium. The ES trains are all pretty new, and 2nd class is quite comfortable. The seats are all either 4 together (2 facing 2) or 2 side by side. 2nd class has 4 seats across, (2/2), 1st only 3.
All seats on ES trains (i.e. from Rome to Venice) are reserved - 1st and 2nd class both are mandatory, so again, no great benefit.
If you are extra sized and will feel squished in anything but a wide seat, then 1st class would be better. Otherwise, save your money.

Depends on where you are, if travelling on a train in the UK there is not a lot of difference infirst and second class, but a big difference in price. You can still reserve a seat if you book in advance for second class or most of your cheaper ticket options.
