On my way back from Amalfi in October, I will spend one night (have to throw those coins in the fountain) in Rome. I usually stay near the forum but am thinking of the square around the Pantheon. Anyone have experience with either of two hotels: Sole del Pantheon or the Senato (names more or less correctly written)? How do they compare?Grazie
Sole del Pantheon or Senato?

May 24, 2013. How to avoid lines in Paris, and other observations

Havedn't stayed at Sole de Pantheon, but have stayed at del Senato. It was very nice. Relatively good price, considering the location.
I have stayed at the del senato twice, and found it enjoyable.
but, to get more opinions, type in the names of these two hotels (separately) into the Text Search Box at the top of this page.
It will pull up dozens of posts.
Enjoy !

Notwithstanding the price increases of the past five years, the Albergo del Senato continues to get mostly rave reviews here on this forum. I fear for them having the "rest-on-their-laurels" phenomenon, but it doesn't seem to have happened. In defense of their price increases, they offer a great hotel at a fantastic location and demand exceeds supply. What would any of us do if we were in their business? And I believe that they are continuing to make the place even more pleasant (cosmetic upgrades, etc)
Sole del Pantheon seems to get little mention here, and more than a few unfavorable.
The charm of either place might be somewhat reduced this year? (summer? fall? I'm not sure) by extensive ccafolding/restoration work across the front of the Pantheon itself - - diminishes that lovely sight, essentially eyeball to eyeball with the "M AGRIPPA..." that is right out your window from many of the rooms of del Senato. But still a great hotel.
Best wishes,
Rex
We've stayed twice (1998 and 2001) at the Albergo del Sole al Pantheon and won't stay again. The first time, we were starry-eyed about being in Rome and about the location, which is fantastic. So we overlooked or forgave a lot. When we returned, it seemed close to shabby (worn bedding, exposed wiring in the bathroom), and the desk clerks who we thought were "typically Italian" and funny the first time seemed just plain arrogant the second time around. I have offered comments about the del Sole in Karen Brown's and in Fodor's hotel reviews (and in fact I think both have removed the Albergo del Sole al Pantheon from their list of recommended places). We're going back to Rome in October for a week and staying at the Del Senato. Based upon reviews, here and on Trip Advisor and elsewhere, we are very optimistic. As for the renovations at the Pantheon, I e-mailed the del Senato's manager a couple of weeks ago and she replied by saying that at this time the renovations are confined to the interior, and that the exterior work won't commence at least until next year. If you'll click on my screen name, you'll find a thread in which I asked Fodorites who've recently been to Rome to confirm this, and the answers I got seem to do so. We are pretty fired up about returning to Rome - it is an awesome city that I would visit annually if possible - and we won't let the hotel dictate whether we have a good time or not; but we're thinking this time is going to be the best trip of the three. Hope yours is similarly rewarding.
I think that the Santa Chiara and the Cesari are better value in that area.
Thanks all for the responses. One thing for sure from all the responsive info including reference to other sources -- the sole del pantheon should be off any recommended list at present (supposedly the oldest hotel in Rome, etc so it's too bad).
