slovenia travel base

Hello!!

I am off to Slovenia next month for a week to 10 days and will be renting a car to travel around and visit the country. I have found a few inns that I would like to stay at but wonder if geographically it makes sense to visit them all. The inns are located: in the Soca valley, the Karst region, there is one in Ptuj and I think that we would also like to stay one night in Goriska Brda for wine tasting. We had hoped to stay at a place and make day trips to different towns and sites and then return to the inn at night. We like nature and walking, drinking wine, good meals and meeting local people!!

Thanks so much in advance. The forum is wonderful.

To be sure I understand your question: Are you asking if you should stay in all of these inns you have found instead of staying in one place for nine nights and doing day trips everywhere?

There are people who hate packing-and-unpacking to stay at a new hotel every few days and prefer staying in one place vs. doing a lot of extra driving. I would prefer to reduce my driving and stay in more places, even that means checking out / checking in more often. I'll do day trips too but try to balance between moving too much and driving too much. Your balance of driving vs. switching lodging is a personal preference.

You could also choose a base in eastern Slovenia and one in the west.

I found driving in Slovenia easy. I didn't drive in the eastern part of Slovenia, though - I stayed a few nights in Maribor and took the train into Ptuj for an afternoon (then picked up my car later in Ljubljana). It's a nice town but fairly sleepy; on the other hand, don't expect to see many other tourists, which may be to your liking.

You don't mention Ljubljana, but I assume you will at least visit for a day? It's a lovely, charming little city, especially at night.

You can read my 2011 trip report for more about my trip then and some pictures.

Slovenia is small and with very good motorways and roads and from Ljubljana you can be anywhere in one or two hours.
You can stay in Ptuj or Maribor for eastern part of country, few days in Ljubljana, then Soca Valley and Goriska Brda.
I recommend to look at Tripadvisor as there you will find a lot more info on Slovenia as is difficult to list everything here. You will be shocked how much diversity is cramped in this small Country. The hidden gem of Europe.

Wine drinking and driving don't go well together.
We based ourelves in Ljubljana for 7 nights.
We had no time to go to the east of Slovenia.

We spent 10 days in slovenia and stayed at different inns around the country. We flew in/out from Vienna so the following made the most sense for us: 2 days Logarska Dolina, 2 days Bohinj/Bled, 1 night in Soca river valley after doing the Vrisc pass, 2 nights Piran and lastly 1 night in Ljubljana. I would not change much if we were to go back. We did wine tasting in Croatia from Piran (quick drive).

mnag, Logarska Dolina is on my to-see list for a future visit to Slovenia, having missed it the first view visits. Where did you stay and what did you do in the area? How did you like it? What time of year?

Andrew, sorry havent come back to this forum in a few days. We stayed at Hotel Plesnik in logarska dolina. Its a family run hotel and slightly dated but the views out the window more than make up for any short comings. The service was excellent and the food quite good. But really what you are there for is the idyllic valley setting. Make sure if you stay there you get a room with the views. The mountain is literally in the backyard. There are lots of wonderful short walks/hikes and you can also visit Rinka falls. The highlight for me surely though was the panoramic road drive....jaw dropping views around every corner. There are lots of nice pull over areas with picnic benches to enjoy the serene scenery.

Thanks. I got the idea that "the views" are the highlight of seeing the area. I did some beautiful drives in Bosnia in May for kind of the same reason. In the Logarska Dolina I would be stopping for lots of pictures.
