Hello mgamburg, not familar with Slovenia but if you do a search here on Fodors you should find some informative threads (assuming the search box is working properly).
Trieste has quite a history and is a beautiful city. It is a couple of hours from Venice by train. I would say it is defintely worth a visit (I would stay overnight). Get some historical information about Trieste befoe you visit it so you will truly appreciate it. Best wishes.
Hi
Just to differentiate, Triest is a city and Slovenia is a Country. I've been to Slovenia and drove through Trieste. I'd like to return there someday. Slovenia probably requires proobably more than a day or two. Ljubljana is the capitol and is worth a day or two by itself. If you have just a day or two try Koper or Pirano on the coast of slovenia. We stayed in Pirano a few years ago. Its a really nice town on the Adriatic coast. It used to be part of Italy so there is some bi-lingualism. The seafood is wonderful and fresh. Many Italians bring their boats there and buy in the duty free shops though they wouldn't sell to us because we didn't come by boat. Had a really nice time. It's not too far from Trieste as we drove from there and passed through.
Enjoy
