Slovenia 4 days - need help on Itinierary

Jump to last reply

Looking for some help. We will be traveling in Istria (staying in Groznan for 3 nights) and then have an additional 3 or 4 nights to spend visiting Slovenia and nearby places before we head back to Zagreb where my friend lives. We have a car.

Looking for help on the intinerary. Not too interested in the caves. Was thinking of a loop that included the coast, the soca valley and Kobarid, Bled, and Luglijana. What do people think?

I'd prefer to only stay in one or two places to minimize unpacking, and do trips from a central spot. Any suggestions? Also, if people think we are better off hitting some sights on the East side of the country, we could, by fitting them in after Lublijana on the way back to Zagreb.

You can read my 2011 Slovenia trip report by clicking on my name.

If you want to spend a night on the coast, spend a night in Piran - lovely town - then make a long day of the next day and drive up to Kobaird, then backtrack to Ljubljana and spend three nights there. Or, stop in Piran for a few hours and drive on to Kobaird, spend a night there, and spend a little more time in the Soca Valley, then on to Ljubljana.

From Ljubljana, day trip to Lake Bled, perhaps to Lake Bohinj. You can see Ljubljana itself in a few hours - there isn't a ton to see and not large but it's a lovely downtown, great architecture, great ambiance, a few museums (take or leave them based on your interests) and not many American tourists. I happen to like cities and think Ljubljana at night offers more opportunities for dining etc. whereas Bled itself isn't much of a town.

If you don't care as much for cities, perhaps stay in Bled or Lake Bohinj area and day trip to Ljubljana instead of what I suggested above. The area around Bohinj is not very developed and it's easy to get a "back to nature" feel, whereas Bled is much more of a conventional tourist town.

When driving between Bled and Ljubljana, consider a detour to the town of Škofja Loka - nice town, worth a stop, but the curvy detour drive between Škofja Loka and Bled through the hills (instead of through Kranj) is especially beautiful.

"I'd prefer to only stay in one or two places to minimize unpacking, and do trips from a central spot" -- Almost anything within Slovenia is within an hour or two of Ljubljana, so you could easily stay there. Or, given the distances, you could probably stay elsewhere if you prefer, although many of the roads are arrayed as spokes, so you might end up having to go back into Ljubljana multiple times if you choose to stay elsewhere.

I would love to see more of Slovenia -- it is beautiful! FWIW, I thought Ljubljana deserved a full day (but that really depends on your priorities). And if you want to visit Bled Castle, take a pletna out onto Lake Bled, and hike the Vintgar Gorge, you might want to plan for a full day there.
