I'm planning a mother/(adult) daughter trip to Malta for 5 days in September. Could anyone recommend any hotels in the Sliema/St Julian area. We will not be renting a car so would like to be close to buses and restaurants. I have been looking at the Hilton Malta, Crowne Plaza and Preluna Hotel. Would appreciate any recommendations.

Berrios, See my post of today about our recent trip with kids to Malta. Loved it! But, per suggestions on this website, we stayed at the Castille Hotel in Valletta. 10 minute walk from busses to everywhere! We almost stayed in Sliema at the Waterfront Hotel, and walked by it and the Preluna during out stay, and they looked fine. But, if you want to get around by bus, Valletta is probably more advantageous. Of course, the trade off is that our hotel did not have a pool or waterfront for swimming if you need that. Have fun.
March/April I stayed for 2 weeks in the Crowne Hotel in Sliema which was fine. But, in hindsight (I was on a tour which was great) if going on my own I would stay in Valletta. Much to see in the town and all busses meet/leave in Valletta. However, Julian has lots of restaurants & nightlife but you can easily bus from Valletta and back. Didn't care much for Sliema itself. Questions on restaurants/sites, feel free to e-mail me at nbale02@earthlink.net.

Also, read under the Malta heading, Nancy's & Adrienne's Great Adventure - Adrienne did a terrific job of writing about our trip
I, too, can vouch for staying in Valletta. We enjoyed it 100%.
The only drawback is that the entire city seems to shut down between 5 and 7 p.m. There are a few bars/restaurants open after that, but not too many.
Even so, as others have said, you can easily bus or taxi to Sliema or other nearby night spots, if you so desire.
