Last October, we booked an apartment with Sleep In Italy for a stay this June. In late March, we got an e-mail that the Palazzo del Paradiso apartment we had booked for three nights was no longer available. It seems the owner was having a difficult pregnancy and would have to leave Rome for the summer. Therefore, she would not be able to let us in the apartment. When I questioned the agent at Sleep in Italy about why someone else couldn't let us in the apartment, she got very rude and said it just wasn't possible.
We had booked very early so that we would have our choice of accommodations. I spent days on-line trying to find an alternative, and almost everything that appealed to me was booked. Sleep In Italy did find us another apartment, but it is not what I would have selected.
After this mess, I did read some other posts (maybe on Slow Trav??) about this sort of thing happening to others who used Sleep In Italy. It was bizarre to me that the owner would not simply have someone else let us in the apartment. I have to wonder whether someone else wanted the apartment for a longer period, and we were simply dumped since we were only staying 3 days.

Digbydog, I suspect your last paragraph is a good possibility -- or that as with many of the apartments, other agencies handle them as well and perhaps talked the owner into a "better" rental for them. To be honest, this is one reason I've never done less than a full week rental. I feel there are too many opportunities for the owners to want a better rental than three nights.
