Skip Salzburg or Zermatt? Please help decide.

Hi All,

We are thinking about Prague, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Wengen and Zermatt for about 2 and a half weeks this fall. We know the CH towms require a lot of trains in making it up there. If you could cut out a place would you cut Salzburg (and do day trip there), or would you cut out Zermatt and do it on next trip? Trying to cut one of those out, but have never been to any????. Thank you.

Liz,
IMHO, I would cut Zermatt and Wengen and add Budapest. It is only 3 hours from Vienna and you could do a big loop, sandwiching it between Vienna and Prague. I would save CH for another time!
Cheers,
Jan

We did a Germany/Austria/ tiny bit of Switzerland loop 2 years ago, and spent a day in Salzburg. It was one of the highlights of our trip. The city was beautiful, and our afternoon Sound of Music afternoon bus trip(I know, but this was really fun, and we don't do organized tours!)was great. I wouldn't skip Salzburg. We did wish we'd scheduled more time for the lake district....
One place I would've cut from my trip was the Ludwig Palace NeuSchwannstein...so crowded, we didn't get in.

I agree to add Budapest if you are going to do Prague and Vienna and Salzburg. This is one trip. On the other hand, Zermatt is a trek no matter when you go, at the end of a long and distant valley. Wengen and Grindelwald are easy to get to. However Zermatt and Wengen-Grindelwald have the most fantastic Alpine scenery there is. You have to decide what kind of a trip you want -- cities or mountains. If you are skiers, you would be well advised to do the Switzerland trip in winter which is the most gorgeous season of all, or in high summer. Fall is a bit iffy in the mountains, could be cold, rainy, foggy, etc. if you are getting in October and November.

I agree with Jan. As much as I love CH, it's just too far out of your way. Budapest is one option but there are so many other possibilities too -- Lindau on Lake Constance (Bodensee) is lovely, as are the many lakeside towns in the Salzkammergut in Austria. Also, there's Garmisch or the Romantic Road, etc.

I do not like to hop from big city to big city. I would skip Switzerland and enjoy the mountains in Bavaria. I would do Prague and Vienna then rent a car and base myself in Ramsau near Bertchesgaden and do some day trips, hiking and just relaxing. I have driven into Salzberg and Munich numerous times for the day without any problems. Plenty to see and do also in the Garmisch area - Ludwigs Castles - Oberamergau - Weiss Church-Andechs. Save CH for another trip.
