Skiing Zermatt

I would like to plan a skiing trip with some friends to Zermatt Matterhorn in March and need help with where to stay. With trying to be price conscious, which side do I stay on? Swiss or Italy (Cervinia)? Factoring in flights from NYC and the exchange rate and good skiing.

Thanks!

www.zermatt.ch (assuming that site still works). Factoring in flights is not the only thing you need to consider: getting to the slopes from the airport is another consideration.

If you stay in Zermatt then you might consiier flying into Geneva although with the new rail tunnel(s) Zurich may be as goo an option. You'll need to get to Visp where you transfer for the train up to Zermatt; forget a car since you'd have to park outside the village anyway.

Be aware that during certain seasons many of the accommodations have a week's minimum rental.

BTW, you could get to Zermatt from Milan by taking the train from there to Brig and onward.

To look at your travel options use the site http://www.rome2rio.com/

For Zermatt - fly into Geneva or Zurich
For Cervinia - fly into Milan Malpensa

Cervinia will be considerably cheaper but Zermatt is better organised and is car free. It is possible to get a ski pass which covers both resorts.

With the Swiss railways it is possible to send your luggage in advance so that on the train you will only need to carry an overnight bag.

Neckervd: "from Basel airport(2-3 train changes, trains every hr): 3 3/4 to 4 1/4 hrs"

This info is not correct.
From Basel airport, there are no trains.
http://www.euroairport.com/en/passen...ess/train.html

You take either a taxi or bus to the SBB station. From there you can catch a train to Brig or Visp (we prefer Brig) and then pick up the train to Zermatt. Several times a day you can catch a train from Basel SBB to Zermatt that requires only one change and takes three hours, 19 minutes.

From Milano Centrale, there are direct trains to Visp and Brig and you can pick up the train to Zermatt there. The journey from Milano Centrale to Zermatt takes about 3.5 hours.

Weisser Tee: you are right, of course, there are buses (Swiss Travel Pass etc. valid) from Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg airport (situated in the Alsacian village of Blotzheim) to Basel SBB railway station (called Centralbahnhof by many elder people).

The purpose of my post was just to compare journey times and frequency of public transport between ZRH, GVA, BSL and Zermatt as well as between MXP and Breuil.

Basel SBB - Zermatt: never travel via Brig, you would arrive about 1/2 hr later, sometimes with another train change at Visp.
For example:
Basel SBB dp 12.31 - Visp 14.30/14.41 - Zermatt ar 15.50
resp:
Basel SBB dp 12.31 - Brig 14.40/14.58 - Visp 15.04/15.08 - Zermatt ar 16.13 (or - if you don't manage to change at Visp in 4 min only - at 16.50).

The Geneva bound EC trains from Milan don't stop at Visp, therefore one MUST change at Brig. But the Milano Centrale - Zermatt connection has absolutely nothing to do with this thread.

As we live in Basel, we know that perfectly well. However, we prefer Brig to Visp as a down and usually stop there for lunch and a wander around. We've never had to change trains again at Visp.

It's easy. Trains leaving Visp at ...41 come from Brig whereas trains leaving Visp at ...08 originate at Visp. These latter can be reached from Brig by SBB trains

WeisserTee's info shows that Milan is good for Zermatt too.

Flying from New York the Emirates flight is one of the best.

Necker, who made you the final authority on what has to do with this thread and what doesn't? If the OP opts to fly from NYC to Milan, it definitely DOES have to do with this thread if the OP decides to take a train to Zermatt from Milano Centrale.

Try dialing back a notch on the arrogance.

More info on Emirates -

JFK - MXP Flight 206 22.20 - 12.05

MXP - JFK Flight 205 15.40 - 19.00

Quite convenient times to arrive at Zermatt late afternoon and with a departure from Milan which does not mean you have to leave Zermatt at the crack of dawn.

The OP has started a few threads but has never returned to any of them. Not sure he knows how to find them once he's posted (or just can't be bothered to respond)

Only if he wants to visit the city of Milan. Otherwise he will go directly from MXP to Gallarate - Domodossola - Brig, without making the huge detour via Milano Centrale.
There are also direct buses from MXP to Domodossola.

Hi all,

What is the best way to get to Cervinia? Flying into Milan or Turin? Then from there where do I fly to or do I take a bus to the mountain?

Torino Caselle airport is closer to Breuil Cervinia than Milano Malpensa.
Fly to Turin if you can do that easily. If the flight to Turin would last longer, cost more or necessitate another plane change, it would probably be better to fly to Milano MXP.
There are actually no direct public buses from MXP or Caselle airport to Breuil Cervinia. You can book a private transfer, however:
http://www.cervinia.it/pages/COME_ARRIVARE_i_en/440

There are some direct buses from both, Milano Lampugnano bus terminal and Torino Porta Susa bus stop during the season, often only on weekends. These buses leave Milan resp Turin often in early morning.
for example: bus SADEM, Torino PS dp 7.00 - Breuil Cervinia ar 9.15

Otherwise, you can reach Breuil Cervinia from both airports with some changes.
