Sights to see, places to stop in drive from Edinburgh to London
We will be driving from Edinburgh to London, planning to stay either one night in southern Scotland and one night in England en route to London, or two nights in England en route to London. We would like to see the area south of Edinburgh and also Hadrian's Wall, near Newcastle. From there, we'd like to see York and go west to Stoke on Trent to see the pottery area. We'll drop off the car at Heathrow during the evening of the third day. Any suggestions for routes or interesting places to see and places to stay along the way? I realize that we will be driving from the east to the west, but we'd like to see both Hadrian's wall and Stoke on Trent.

I have to agree. If those are the places you really want to see, then that is all you have time to do. Find the quickest route between them and see them. There are too many lovely places between Edinburgh and London to be able to suggest any thing else. And you do not have time.
Happy travels.

You are talking nearly 550 miles and easily 12+ hours behind-the-wheel time without any stops. This is not a an easy 2.5 or even 3 day jaunt.
Plan on a minimum of 3 or 4 hours to see bits of Hadrian's Wall, several hours in York (after parking and walking into the center), however much time you want to spend in stoke-on-Trent (pottery museums presumably).
W/o Stoke you could do this: day 1 - Edinburgh to York visiting Hadrian's wall enroute. Getting in to York in the evening. Spending the next full day in York. The next morning driving down to LHR. Or for a VERY long day - York to Stoke-on-Trent to LHR.
But you certainly don't have time for any other excursions/sites.
