In mid-September will be driving from Montepulciano to Siena on a Sunday. Will have spent three days driving around Southern Tuscany. Planning on driving to Siena via Asciano. Will have two nights in Siena before going to Florence. Given its a Sunday not sure what will be open in Siena. Considering some other options as I expect most of Siena to be closed on a Sunday? Other options I'm considering are.

1. Spend day on a drive through Chianti driving S222 seeing the landscape and Chianti towns i.e. Greve. Was going to do this on my drive to Florence later in the week, perhaps it makes sense to use my Sunday for this?

2. Drive to San Gimignano for the afternoon?

3. Stay in Siena and tour through city.

4. Perhaps there is an option I haven't considered? Will have done Montalcino/Montepulciano/Pienza are prior to drive to Siena.

Appreciate you sharing your thoughts and experiences on my options.

Both Il Pozzo in Monteriggioni and Gallo Nero in Greve are good places to eat.

I had a three hour lunch at Il Pozzo one Sunday. Reservations required.

You will be fine through lunch. It is after lunch that non-tourist places close.

Almost all museums in Italy are open on Sundays. Churches are also open (of course) but you have to plan your touristic visits around the masses. Many shops will be closed, except those that cater mostly to tourists.

Shops that close at lunch time usually reopen at 4:30 or 5 PM.

For Italians, Sunday is the most popular day for day trips, partly because schools are open six days a week. This means that very popular tourist locations, like San Gimignano, will have lots of Italian day trippers in addition to the usual hordes of tourists.

Are you planning on dropping your rental car in Siena on Sunday? You're not going to want it in Florence. But the rental car offices will be closed on Sunday. If you're not allowed to just leave the car in the lot and drop the keys through a slot in the door, you'll have to pay to park the car at least one night.

The most direct route from Siena to Florence is by bus. You pick it up in the historic center, in the Piazza Gramsci. And it drops you across the street from the main train station in Florence.

The two museums in Siena are closed on Sunday. But the real sight in Siena -- in addition to the Duomo -- is the town itself. A leisurely drive combined with a leisurely Sunday lunch ought to fill up a good part of the day. You can wander around the town for the rest of that Sunday.

I think you will find much of the sites open on Sunday. If you click the various museums on the city's website (start with Torre del Mangia), you will see most things are open.
