Didn't give this a thought until I read several posts about hearing church bells all night. As we are both light sleepers in our "older" age I don't like the sound (no pun intended) of this.
Is there any hotel with AC under Euro 150 (high season) where one wouldn't hear the bells?

Cheryl - - I wonder if you can cite any sources of these "several posts" - - and ask there, by re-posting about the vailidity.

The notion of &quot;intolerable bells&quot; at <i><b>San Gimignano</b></i> seems to have come from a single post - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34717429 - - and others have generally not reported a similar problem.

Perpetuation of an &quot;I read somewhere&quot; seems to take on a life of its own here.

I stayed in an apartment in Siena opposite the Baptestry, so in close proximity to the Duomo (and the bells). I had been warned that some people found the bells disturbing, but can honestly say that they were never an issue for me.

Last summer in a small town in Spain we booked 4 nights in a small inn. Night one I thought I was going to go crazy as the bells (less than a block away) tolled every 15 minutes all night long. At 6:30 a.m. I told my husband that we were just going to have to leave because I couldn't get a moment's sleep in the place. He told me to forget it and to figure out how to deal with it. (We'd specifically chosen this place because the owner was so helpful with arranging some day biking trips that we wanted to take in the area).

Night two I got out the earplugs I always take with me so I can try to sleep on the flight from the US to Europe. This was the magic cure. Didn't have any problems the remaining nights.

The worst one I can't find...the poster spoke of thinking the bells would end at midnight and they didn't...I believe she
said they tolled 12 times at midnight and in the morning informed her husband they were changing hotels.

So maybe I need to ask for a hotel not close to churches.

Just ask when you book the hotel if you can hear church bells at night. Make it sound like you love the idea, so they'll be eager to tell you the truth if bells are audible inside the hotel rooms.

I think you said in another post that you are going to Venice too ? I haven't found it a problem but I know others who've been woken up by church bells in Venice.
