Going to Sicily with 2 teenagers early October, 1 week, flying into Catania, and out of Palermio. looking for some tips on where to stay and also which is the best area to go for activities, watersports, may rent a car or use public transport.

It might not be warm enough for watersports in Oct. You'll get more responses about lodging if you state your budget.
The Lonely Planet guides usually provide good coverage of active sport options.
I would definitely stay in Palermo for half the week. You have the city atmosphere with access to beaches.
I agree that it might not be warm enough to put your bodies into the water. You might want to consider saying what type of water sports you're looking for. Water sports could mean anything.
