Nope - really not necessary. There are just as many "cute little villages" and interesting places around Vence/Nice Hinterland/Var as there are in Provence. Your problem is that you should be spending 3 weeks in the Cote d'Azur & Provence instead of your 7 1/2 days.

Only my individual choice, and I've been to Venice already three times so that colors it, but I'd add the time in Provence. Loved Avignon, wanted to get to Aix, spent lovely times in Arles, Nimes, plus Uzes and the Pont de Gard. Dearly wished we could also get closer to the coast northwest of Marseilles.

Two days in Venice is a good introduction, but I guess if you've never been and really want to see all the art, churches, etc., it might not satisfy you. Good luck.

Oh gee, Dr_DoGood -- to quote Emily Litella, "never mind." My excuse is the miniscule font that this particular browser uses. Poor excuse tho, since Vence makes much more sense.

I would still make sure to spend more time in Avignon, Arles, Nimes, etc. and Uzes is a small gem if a little touristed with shoppe-poos.

If Vence and Goult are to be treated primarily as bases of operation, that's one thing. Vence is pretty and has the Matisse chapel, but beyond that?

Otherwise: "Venice"?! DUH!

(Thought it was going to be a rough night's drive from Nice.)

Vence has a very nice "old" center. Plus, it is centrally located to explore all the other stuff in the Nice Hinterland.

Maybe I can make up for my offenses by cutting-and-pasting a comment on another forum from cigalechanta, one of the finer Fodorites you'll ever read:

"A hotel/restaurant was a favorite. we stayed there several times as my birthday present.
The Colombre DÓr isin St Paul de Vence. The place is filled with art by famous painters who paid their bill that way.
A huge Calder stabile by the pool. A huge thumb by Cesar
at the entrance and all the rooms have paintings.
My happiest nights in Provence."

PalenQ, you know that it is, but I think you also know she was referring to splitting her time between the Cote d'Azur and the area of Provence further inland.

I'm as pro Vence (sorry!) as the next guy but 3 nights there seems a lot.
There's so much more Provence to see. The "arriere-pays" away from the Cote d'Azur doesn't move me much, compared to the Luberon, Avignon and adjacent areas.

I've been to .st. Paul de Vence twice and am confused. Is there also a Vence?

Three years's ago I made reservations for the Colombe D'Or, three months's before. When we arrived, since it had just rained they wouldn't let us dine in the garden so we didn't eat there. We are trying again next June but we told friends about it last year and they went but didn't like it at all. They did 't eat in the garden though but they just didn't like the food.

mjduncan is not going to see more than 10% of the stuff I consider "worthwhile" (very subjective, I realize) in either the Cote d'Azur or Provence. So as long he/she has such limited time, they'll hit mostly "A" stuff.

- 1 1/2 days in Nice. He'll probably not get out of Nice - maybe Antibes or Villefranche - but I doubt it.

- 3 days in Vence.
First day visit Vence, St Paul, Tourrettes, Gourdon, and the Loup loop,
Next day, head up the Var River & visit Villars, Touet, and especially Entrevaux. Then the breathtaking Gorges du Daluis, even better Gorges du Cians, and the Vallee de la Tinee - perhaps exploring the villages of Bairols, St Martin Vesubie, and Lantosque.
Next day - a little closer to the coast seeing Eze, Gorbio, St Agnes, Peille, Peillon, and Sospel. Maybe dropping into Menton if there is time left in the day.

Then on to Provence and on the way visiting Fayance, Seillans, Bargemon, then Chateaudouble, cute Tourtour, Cotignac, then hopping on the Autoroute and on to Goult

2 days in Goult
First day visit the villages & pretty countryside of the Luberon
Next day, market in Carpentras, the Gorges de la Nesque & do my "lavender route" in reverse - including Simiane la Rotonde.

You don't have any "south of France" cities in what I suggested. On the day you leave Vence & go to Goult, I would head out early (8:00) and drive to Aix and spend the morning there. Have lunch on the Cours Mirabeau at Deux Garcons, stroll around a tad after lunch - then on to Goult.

You are all so wonderful. Thank you Stu for the day by day suggestions. Stu are you suggesting that I leave at 8 am Wednesday and drive from Vence via Fayence, Seillans, Bargemon, Chateadouble, Tourtou, Cotignac then to Aix or straight to Aix?
