Should I Stay In the 14th Arrondissement?
Planning a quick trip to Paris in a few weeks - could not resist the incredibly cheap airfare! My question is regarding the 14th. I 've always stayed in the 6th because it seemed convenient to the sights and shops I enjoy. I've found a nice apartment in the 14th backing the Luxembourg gardens for a good price (yes, I'm one of those who enjoy renting an apartment) Is this a good central location? Thanks.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with staying in the 14th, especially if the price is right, but the Jardin du Luxembourg is still in the 6th the last time I checked. But no matter where the apartment is in the 14th, it's only a short walk to the 6th, across Boulevard du Montparnasse.

If think the decision depends where you are located in the 14th. While the northern part of the 14th lies along Boulevard Montparnasse, the area extends south quite a ways.
The apartment cannot be in the 14th and "back up" to Luxembourg Gardens. The hotel I normally use in Paris is on Raspail about 200 yards from Blvd Montparnasse, which is the northern boundary of the 14th. The Gardens are north of there! If you are on Montparnasse, near Raspail, the distance is not huge, but it is a short walk. I would estimate it at about 1 k or a little less to the first entrance.
South of the hotel, the 14th stretches to the Perimeter Highway, which is a considerable distance from the Gardens.
There is nothing wrong with the 14th. I like the location of the hotel I use, and it is within a reasonable distance of the Gardens, which are quite pleasant in the summer. I don't know how they would be in late November

Hi helrot,
If you have the address of your apt you can enter it at www.multimap.com, www.mappy.com or www.viamichelin.com and see where the Metro stops are.
You can also find travel time from your apt to anywhere else at

The farthest point in the 14th from Jardin du Luxembourg is approximately 3 Kms (1.8 miles) distance, which even I don't consider to be very far, but it could be worth a metro ticket, depending on the weather.
There are two metro stops along Boulevard Brune / Boulevard Jourdan, Porte de Vanves (#13 line) & Porte d'Orleans (#4 line), but the closest stop to the gardens is Norte-Damn des Champs, which requires a change at Montparnasse.

I often stay in the 14th also, and like it very much -- just south of bd Montparnasse. Unless you have real misinformation, or maybe are near some other gardens, it sounds like your apt. is probably near bd Montparnasse, in which case it is pretty central. There are a lot of public transportation options around there, and it's only a little over a mile from the Seine. I personally would not stay at the farthest edges of the 14th, though, nor near bd Brune, etc., and wouldn't recommend it to someone who doesn't know Paris very well. It sounds like you've been there at least twice, don't you know where the 14th is or have a Paris map to check distance?
