Short Trip in July

Land in Frankfurt on July 11th and train to Regensburg. The following day continue by train to Garmisch for the 12th and 13th. Head back to Munich on the 14th. Train to Frankfurt airport Sunday morning the 16th. Not a lot of time and realistically couldn't visit Salzburg. My thoughts are to have a nice easy relaxing time in the Garmisch area instead of spending the entire trip in cities. Thoughts and suggestions?

I would do the same. We loved Garmish and some great walks there.

Good to hear that you favor my itinerary. I know there are some gorges we can visit.......other than that, a bike ride or two? Got to Mittenwald for a couple hours? Any suggestions on lodging, beer gardens, etc., would be helpful, too.

Hi barrcoop,

I live in Garmisch, so I hope I can help --

Looks like you'll only have one full day in Garmisch; you arrive on the 12th, have the full day on the 13th, and then depart on the 14th.

My favorite hike in the are is from Krün (take the bus there) to Mittenwald through the buckelwiesen, about 2h, then you can enjoy some time in Mittenwald, including seeing the violin-making museum.

You can take the cable car up to either the Alspspitze or the Kreuzeck, hike between the two (about 1h30), then take the other cable car down.

If you want to go up the Zugspitze, here is my usual recommendation:
At the Garmisch train station, go downstairs and follow the tunnel to the Zugsptitzbahn, and take the train up to the Zugspitzplatt (Zugspitze glacier), 90 minutes. Enjoy the views from the glacier, have a bite to eat if you want, then take the cable car up to the summit (10 or 15 minutes). At the summit, have a meal or just take in the views and enjoy the sun terrace. Then take the back down again, but get off at the Eibsee. Walk around the Eibsee (90 minutes), then have cake and coffee at the lakeside restaurant. Take the Eibsee bus (runs about once an hour, and the trip takes 20 minutes) to the Marienplatz in Garmisch. Walk through town on the pedestrian path.

Other nice hikes are up to the St Martins Hütte, about 1h, the Kramerplateau path (can be 1h or 5h, with access at different points in Garmisch & Grainau), or the Philosopher's path to Farchant (about 2h).

There are numerous bike paths, too, of course, My favorite is to take the train (bikes go on the trains for about 5€) to Murnau, then bike back to Garmisch via Grafenaschau, Schwaigen, Eschenlohe, Oberau, & Farchant. This is about 20 miles.

As for lodging, what are you looking for -- apartment or guesthouse/pension or hotel? And what is your budget?

Have fun as you plan!

I should add that I plan to be in Regensburg for 4 nights in June. My plans include a historical tour of the old town (1h30, 8€), visiting the Historical Museum (5€) and the Dokument Neupfarrplatz (excavation of a Roman army camp, 5€), and an excursion to Passau.

I don't think I'll be taking a cruise on the river, but if you want to investigate that, look at:

http://www.donauschiffahrt.de/en/cru...egensburg.html

If you'd like information on tours in Regensburg, they are here:

https://tourismus.regensburg.de/en/g...oric-city.html

I can give you more information & my impressions in late June/early July.

Swandav.....A wealth of information. Many thanks! As for my budget for lodging. I go to New York alot and pay through the nose for hotels. In Garmisch in the Summer I'd guess $ 150 to $175 should get me a very nice room. But, you would know.

Hi again,

Oh, I hope some of it will help! Thanks for the thanks --

Yes, your budget is very healthy! Is that for one person or two? Many German hotels charge by the person rather than by the room.

My two favorite hotels in Garmisch are these:

Hotel Zugspitze, 4-star, sits on a quiet street between the train station and the pedestrian zone, just steps from the pedestrian zone or from the nearest bus stop. I did a dummy booking for a single room for 12-14 July, and the total cost ranges from 240 - 309€, depending on which package you take.

Hotel Bavaria, 3-star, sits on a quiet street just steps from the pedestrian zone and not far from the train station. Again I did a dummy booking for a single for your dates, and the total costs range from 142€ for a single to 186€ for a double.

You are just missing a huge event in Garmisch that draws a lot of folks -- BMW Days. That runs from 7-9 July, so it won't touch your dates. You'll only be competing for a room with hikers and families, etc, so you should be ok.

Have fun!

Thanks again. More questions, though. I'd like to rent bikes and spend my second morning on a nice, low level ride. I'm a marathoner and trail runner but my better half has limitations and no desire to trek over hill and dale. I saw one route that looks pretty and relatively flat. To Katzental? Your thoughts. And, the turn by turn description had a lot of turns and turns! Would one just use the Google Map app on your phone to follow the route?

Hi again,

I guess you mean this one:

https://www.outdooractive.com/en/bic...mdtab=oax-tab1

That's pretty much the one I mentioned above -- I just start in Murnau and go to Garmisch, rather than doing a round-trip.

The site says you can download a pdf with map, so I would do that too, to augment your app. When you download the pdf, you'll get a QR code where you can carry the map/instructions with you on your phone. You can also download a gpx file for your map (though I haven't ever done that).

Have fun!

Atlas Grand looks O K....not sure about the location, though? The Bavaria looks good, too. It appears the Zugspitze only has rooms with adjoining living rooms?

Hi again,

The Atlas Grand is in Partenkirchen -- which is fine in itself. However, it will be a walk (maybe 30 minutes) or a (free) bus ride to get to the train station or to get to some of the hikes/walks. It is, however, convenient for the Partnachklamm, for the Philosopher's Path to Farchant, for any walks on the Wank, and for the biggest (and best?) bike rental place in town. There are fewer restaurants, cafes, & shops in Partenkirchen than in Garmisch, and also fewer English-speaking tourists. Partenkirchen was settled by the Romans, and I feel a distinct difference in atmosphere there, maybe a formality. Garmisch was settled by Germanic tribal farmers, and it feels far less starchy. I lived in Partenkirchen for 18 months before I bought my apartment in Garmisch.

Not sure about the Zugspitze, as I've never stayed there. I haven't stayed in any hotels in this town. My impression of these hotels is just from their location, and in some cases, I've stepped inside and seen the decor. I've known a few people who have stayed at the Zugspitze, and they rave about it; one even said it was the best hotel he'd stayed in in Europe, period.

Have fun!
