Short Corsica trip in/out of Ajaccio - itinerary musts?

We are headed to Corsica for the first time - flying in and out of Ajaccio in early July but only for 4 days/4 nights. As I've been reading about the various regions, it seems like we will have to be selective and efficient in our approach to appreciating the "best of" the island since we have a short timeframe.

We were thinking of staying in Ajaccio the first night for convenience and to get a quick beach "hit" as we don't arrive until 4 pm. My inclination is to drive up to Porto and stay there the remaining 3 days as a home base with 2 day trips (one to Corte and one to Calvi... or the Scandola preserve!? So many choices...!). Then return to Ajaccio the last day (our flight is in the evening, so we have a good amount of time).

Thoughts? Should we be considering the Sud instead? Are those day trips overly ambitious and/or too time-consuming as far as driving time is concerned?
