Shore excursions in Sorrento and Athens

We have a choice of four shore excursions on Sorrento: (1) Isle of Capri and Blue Grotto (2)Isle of Capri (3) Amalfi Coast (4) Pompeii. Which should we pick? Also in Athens our choices are (1) Attica and Cape Sounion (2) Delphi (3) Classical sights of the Peloponnese. Has anyone ever taken the dinner tours in Athens? Is it difficult to get to the Sound and Light show?

If the sound and light show in Athens is the one I went to, DON'T GO! It was nothing. I remember just trying not to be rude and fall asleep while I waited for this thing to be over and later found out that the others in my group didn't like the show either. I don't remember where this thing was or anything. Just that it was at the top of a hill. Cape Sounioun is very nice and worth the trip.

Sounion is beautiful and so is the drive over which (if I recall correctly) is close to 2 hours from the port of Piraeus/Athens. I think you may get more out of one of the other excursions because it's just the nice long drive and the temple ruins. You might get more out of one of the other excursions. As the person above said, you can surely pass up the sound and light show at the Acropolis. A total waste of money and time. You sit in chairs with a nice view of the Acropolis and listen to some story that's been prerecorded and every once in a while they shine a line on different parts of the Acropolis to coincide with what;s happening with the story. Sorrento is a very tough call. I think Pompeii is amazing, but so is the Amalfi coast - in a different way. Capri is nice but it's all about the view, too. The Blue Grotto is neat, a touristy thing, but I would not call it a waste at all. I would base my decision on what other things I'm seeing on the trip and get the right mix of scenery, culture, history, etc. BON VOYAGE.
My husband and I went to the Almfie coast last oct for our honeymoon. We were very surprised at the amount of people everywhere! Caprie is nice but very crowed along with Pompii. If you like history Pompii is a very wonderful and interesting place. Alot of the artifacts have been removed to the museme in Naples but there is still plenty to see. Capri is nice for shopping, the blue grotto and villa tours. I could not get over the crouds though. If you plan to shop there take plenty of money it's very expensive!!!! The Almphie Coast. If the tour takes you to the town of Almpie don't bother. There is a lovely church there to visit but nothing else but a bunch of tourist shops. A very wonderful place is Ravello. If you are looking for quite and lovely villas to wonder through and a good lunch that is my recomadtion. It's a quanit little place way up on a hillside. There is enough there to do to keep you busy all day though. Gore Vidal and many other american have made their home there. Also the people in Ravello are much nicer than most in that regeion.
Tracy
RE: Sorrento - The choices there are difficult, because each offers something different. I think if I'd been on a cruise ship for a while, I'd want to walk around, which is what you'll do at Pompeii. That might be my first recommendation, if the incredible historical aspects appeal to you. My second choice with be the Amalfi Drive. Be sure to get a window seat on the right going there, and left coming back. Amalfi is a neat town, I think. Very hilly, charming. Third choice: Capri, but it's cool, too. The whole Blue Grotto experience is fun - but you just got off one boat! Stay on land for a while. Sorrento is a very comfortable place to visit, if you just want to explore. Enjoy! What a pleasure to have those choices to make!

If I can only choose one then it would be Pompeii. (hopefully the tour company may also throw in a stop at Herculanium which is also a 'must')

With regards to Greece I'd choose the Classical Tour of the Peloponnese. You would enjoy Sounion but the opportunity to visit some of the classical sites such as Mycenae, Epidavros, Corinth etc shouldn't be missed.

Years ago I did go on an Athens by Night tour which included the Sound and Light show (awful) and then we were taken to a small restaurant in the Plaka for a 'traditional' Greek dinner which included plenty of dancing and plate throwing. If we could have spent the whole evening in that restaurant it would have been wonderful!

Bill

I think Pompei would be my first choice and agree to try to include Herculaneum. But Amalfi Coast is great too--charming little towns--Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. I think I might rank Capri last, but if you choose this one, do the Blue Grotto too. What a choice!! Too bad you can't have all of them!!
