We're going to Burgundy and the Rhone Valley in May and I was wondering if the shops close for a few hours in the early afternoon like in Italy.
Thanks for the help.

Shops, including local supermarkets generally close from 12:30 to 2:00 for lunch. It's safer to come before 12 if intending to buy lunch items. But some hypermarchés, often located in mini-malls do stay open the entire day.
