Shopping in Portugal

I will be traveling to Portugal soon. I'd like to know what can I bring back to everyone in the U.S. that Portugal is noted for. Is it pottery, linens? would appreciate your help.

Portugal is known for linens. I saw very nice sheets and other linens there. Also nice pottery, although you are better off outside Lisbon and the other big cities to find good pottery. I found nice jewelry there - gold is less expensive than in the U.S. I also brought back some fun folk art (painted animals on flat metal) to decorate my home.

ro; Beautiful pottery can be found in the Algarve along the coast but I am sure in other parts of the country, too. You and your friends will be very pleased.

If you go to San Miguel, Azores there is an interesting pottery factory there and you can go on a tour.

Well, in Portugal you should buy poetry books, from Camões to Fernando Pessoa. Portugal is the poetry capital of the world.
In the material side of life try cristal, gold articles, shoes ( best shoes in Europe)wine ( try Barca Velha )and the people ( well, they don't want to go to the US, so you'll have to stay...)
Have fun!

Hi ro:
I was in Portugal quite a few years ago and purchased a few beautiful printed scarves (cotton) that I am still wearing. the other posters give you some great ideas and yes the shopping was wonderful. If you like port, you can bring this back for yourself. some wonderful red, white or tawny port which I found to be very drinkable.
Have a great time!
Regards,
Lynn
