Shopping in London

Spending Thanksgiving in London with two teenagers. Daughter interested in some shopping--but not too expensive. Any suggestions on good places to shop?

Take them to Covent Garden. Neals Yard. Plenty of shops with teen stuff, music stores, trendy teen things.
I think it is Camden Town that has some good vintage stores. Portabello Rd would be fun.

Hello, Helen! I was in London a few years ago and couldn't wait to get to Harrod's. I also needed a new outfit for an event we were attending, so I thought, "Great! I'll go to Harrod's and get a new outfit!" I thought that Harrod's was similar to Dillard's, price-wise. HA HA HA I found a cute pair of linen pants, looked at the price tag and almost passed out. I asked the salesgirl if there was a sale rack, and was told "No." She was very nice, though, and told me to check out Selfridge's (spelling?) and Marks and Spenser. Selfridge's was similar to Dillard's (but there was very little that was marked down), and Marks and Spenser reminded me (in price and quality) of J.C. Penney.

So, if your daughter is looking for clothes, I hope this helps. Also, a warning: I stood in line for 20 minutes at Marks and Spenser, and they don't take any credit card, only cash. So, you may want to take that into consideration when you shop. I had assumed that a large department store would take my VISA. Be prepared!

Have fun! I'm green with envy...

Margot:

I realize you said you were in London severalyears ago. About 2 years ago, Marks and Spencer gave in to the 21st century and now accepts credit cards!

If they're looking for clothes, they'll find relatively inexpensive (by London standards) hip and funky clothes at Topshop at Oxford Circus. It's a huge store with its own D.J.s and everything that's trendy in London, which sometimes can be ahead of fashion in North America. Miss Sixty (there's one in Covent Garden) is great for funky jeanswear too but I'm not sure how expensive it is.

I also agree with Katy that they'll find some great buys at Camden Market and will love the atmosphere. Better to go earlier in the morning though as it gets quite busy especially on weekend afternoons.

Another good teenage 'chain' is New Look which has all the latest 'gear' also Hennes stores have something for your girls and, possibly, if your young at heart, something for yourself also.
I live in a village in shropshire in the midlands, and still have that frisson of excitement when I visit london, I'm sure you'll all have a great time.
good luck
CM

We recently enjoyed shopping on Carnaby Street. I know your daughters probably won't know about the 60's but this might be a good opportunity to show them.

She's love to find "cheap" Petite Bateaux. Otherwise she's just like to get a few things

For bath and beauty products you have to check out LUSH. They have wonderful bath bombs, powders, lotions, soaps, etc. that are wonderful and very unique. They've got several stores in London and locations all over Great Britain. Look at their website for locations and addresses.
