We're going to Seville for Holy Week and planned an overnight trip to Malaga.
My friend wants to rent a car and drive as it offers the chance
to make stops along the way. I am concerned
about dealing with crowded roads and streets
in the towns clogged by holy week processions.
I'd rather take the train. Which is the better option?

Definately the train. My sister lives about 30 mins south of seville. We have taken the train to malaga, as they do also. The drive is quite tedious and there are not many decent stops on the way. Marchena, pueblo, osuna, atniquera. And if you are planning an overnight trip there is no point in stopping. There is some fantastic scenery to be seen from the train and it is very comfortable, you do have to book as once all the seats are sold you will not get a ticket. I have only driven from malaga airport north and would not recommend the drive especially during holy week. Malaga station is well placed for most things, the hop on bus stops right outside and i recommend the tour to get acquainted with the town. Train every time
I second the train option, agree with mrgrumpy in all. Book at renfe.com. Also convenient buses from the Prado de San Sebastián bus station in Sevilla, close to the Santa Justa train station. Arrives next to the train station in Málaga. About the same duration with both train and bus, some 2h 30mins.
Málaga has also got a fantastic Holy Week celebration. Not as famous and as many tourists as in Sevilla, but they for sure mean business down here at the coast as well.

If you're not going to have time to explore the area and only have 1 night in Malaga then there's no reason to drive. The train will be much quicker. Just be sure to purchase your tickets in advance - you can probably grab a deeply reduced web fare if you book soon.
