Seville or Granada

I will be in Spain in April 09. I will be based in Malaga for 7 days with 2 more days free. i am toying with going either to Seville or Granada on these 2 days. Any advise? I will be renting a car. If I chose Seville, is it then viarable to do Granada as a day trip?

From Malaga it is only about an hour (to the east) to reach Granada, whereas Seville is about a three-hour ride to the West. So really, Granada and Seville are in the opposite directions for you. Doing Granada as a day trip from Seville is not really feasible, although you could consider doing it from Malaga if you like.

Granada and Seville are both such great places, that it is hard to choose between the two. If you can cut short your Malaga stay slightly, maybe you cannot accomodate both. If not, then with only 2 days, I would suggest you go to Granada and see the Alhambra. Leave Seville for a later trip, as it is hard to do justice to Seville in two days.

Just my opinion, but if there were only 1 sight I could see in all of Spain, it would be the Alhambra.

Granada would be an easy day trip from Malaga.
And so would be Ronda - if you need another destination for your 2nd free day.

Hi raypffong,

for a 2 day stay, IMHO Granada is the ideal destination. the drive east from Malaga is a lot of fun - you drive along the coast and then turn north through the sierra nevada. [you can strike north from the airport and then turn east but we couldn't find the road for toffee and the other road is much nicer]. it probably takes more like 2 hours than 1 - but perhaps that was just us.

once you are there, as well as day and night trips to the alhambra [try to stay in one of the hotels opposite the alhambra to avoid having to park or drive in town] you can go up to the Albercin, eat tapas in town, visit the cathdral and the shops etc.etc.

I haven't seen all of Spain, but IMHO the alhambra is a european "must see", not just for the buildings, but the history, gardens and the situation are fabulous as well.

regards, ann

Hi raypffong,

I spent 3 weeks in Spain last April and I stayed in Seville, Granada, Madrid and Barcelona, and while beautiful Seville is now one of my favorite cities in Europe, I heartily agree with yk that the Alhambra in Granada is the most magical and beautiful sight in all of Spain. I read Washing Irving’s wonderful book Tales of the Alhambra while I was in Madrid and the day I visited the Alhambra, I felt like a little girl visiting Disneyland for the first time. It is absolutely magnificent.

I have to agree with YK and Roadlesstraveled on this. The Alhambra is one place to which I long to return, and hope to do so in a few weeks. It is mysterious, magical, beautiful. The gardens usually peak in May, but should already be lovely in April. Try to read Tales of the Alhambra before you go. I also like the city of Granada very much. The surrounding landscape is also beautiful. It really is a "not to be missed sight."
