Sept weather in the Pyrenees
Greetings to the best travel experts in the world,
Can anyone suggest what the weather will be like in late September, traveling in the Pyrenees? Also, what to wear. Thanks again.
Jim, your very appreciative co-traveling enthusiast

Where in the Pyrenees? It chilly in the upper regions of the Aragon Pyrenees, but it's still rather nice in the Pyrenees Atlantiques, from Navarra, the Pays Basque and Bearn, to the coast, but you can expect some rain now and then.

We were hiking in Huesca (Aragon) for three months (August - October) in 2007. There were some rainy days, but altogether September, and October aswell, was perfect time for hiking. Autumn tint peaked in the middle of October.
Rainy days can be chilly, but you can manage in shorts when the sun is shining.
The Valleys of Ordesa, Chistau, Benasque and Pineta are charming.

Both the Parador Vielha, in the Val D'Aran, and the Parador La Seu D'Urgell, are located in the Catalonia Pyrenees, or as they are known on the French side, the Pyrénées-Orientales.
Seu D'Urgell has a number of excellent hiking/trekking routes
(www.turismeseu.com), while the Val D'Aran (www.torismearan.org/) is a long valley that offers trekking, mountain biking, river rafting and great skiing.

Just a word of advice on the Hwy 260 from Seu to Vielha...twice we've run into blanketing fog, from Seu to Sort, and it then partially lifted the rest of the way to Vielha. No traffic...but white knuckle driving with the fog..very slow.
Seu is just outside of Andorra...you'll be flirting with major bumper to bumper traffic if decide to visit Andorra. IMO nothing of major interest, unless you're thinking of skiing.
From Vielha, the Col Portillon offers great scenery and some off-road hiking. It is invariably used for Tour de France. The colors in early October were striking when we last drove it....had no rain between Andorra and Bagnes du Luchon...just showers near Pau a few days later, and glorious summer-like weather the rest of the way to the coast. If you're going as far as Biarritz, I can recommend one of our favorite lodgings three miles south in the beach town of Bidart....with smashing ocean views...Villa L'Arche. It's a winner, with balconies overlooking ocean vistas, and one of the most unusual lunarscaped beaches.
Have a great trip...

I guess it's too late for your now, (unless you're planning for next year!), but it's been stunning. We're just back from the Hautes Pyrenees, albeit below the mountains themselves), and the high tops were covered in cloud most of the time, but below that it was great. Two days of rain in 15. Shorts and teeshirts weather

Hi,
Just wanted to respond. Yes, we're back. The parador in Vielha is in the beautiful Val d'Aran, a very daunting drive but worth it. The parador itself is OK, not too much charm (as opposed to Cardona, the mountaintop castle--very spectacular). Took a sidetrip to Bosost, also worth it. Another daunting drive took us to Seu d'Urgell, where the parador was rather like a business hotel, and the town itself not that remarkable. Sorry. Others might disagree. In general, the Pyrenees reminded me of the Dolemites, in Austria. Very vertical. Incredible views. Loved the driving. My girlfriend was less enthused. It is scary at times. Best wishes to all.
