Well have done the hop on hop buses that circulate around most main sights and you can get on and off with a day ticket anywhere en route - they give you running commentary on the way - open-air double-deckers so the view is sweet!

Pah to the HOHO buses - $40 for that? Too costly.
Go to www.londontown.com and you can take your pick of suggested walking tours.

I've done the Mayfair one in the DK Eyewitness London Guide, and my daughter and I did one from some little cards she ordered from somewhere to go to Regent's Park and see Queen Mary's Rose Garden. We got a little lost but managed to find our way. Do a Google search; there are lots on there.

I just found this. Though I haven't done them, these self-guided walks look pretty comprehensive to me:

There are some podcast tours you can load into your MP3 player and play them as you walk. Here's one source: www.guardian.co.uk/travel/series/cityguides. iTunes has some for iPods and iPhones.
I think using a podcast tour works better for one person. My husband and I got misaligned and mixed up when we tried to do this in parallel.
