Seeking car hire advice for Girona

We would like to stay 4 nights in Girona on June 8 to 12 to have a break after visiting Madrid (5 dayss) and before Barcelona( 4 days). The idea is to spend first day in Girona and then rent a car to visit Besalu, Cadaques, Tossa de Mar and may be some other places.
Dollar and Thrifty near train station offer car with auto for 155$ for 3 days with full tank full policy. Are they OK? Is any better choices? We paying with Visa Sapphire, should we buy any extra insurance?
Is it better to go from train station in Barcelona to BCN airport, rent car over there and then drive to Girona?
Or just visit Girona by train for a day and forget about Costa Bravo because of car hire troubles? I read terrible reviews and confused, it is our first time in Spain and we do not know Spanish… Please, help to decide. I prefer smaller cozy cities like Girona and rather see rocky shoreline and old monastery and etc, compare to spending time inside of large museums, but without car it is less likely…
