seat reservations on fast trains

My friends and I are travelling from Germany to Paris to Osnabruck. I thought it would be best to each purchase our own ticket and reservation, When I buy a ticket through each site, am I automatically getting a seat reservation? And if that is true, do I actually get a real seat assignment? Just trying to figure if my friends and I will be allowed to sit together if we do not book at the same time?
