Search for Hotel in Rome
My husband and I are staying 2 nights in Rome prior to a cruise in August, 2005. I am doing a great deal of research trying to find a hotel. I want something at least 3 stars in the area near Piazza Narvona, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, but would like to keep the price under $200 a night. Can you recommend a place that is air conditioned and has an elevator if at least 4 floors. Has anyone ever stayed at: Hotel Gambrinus, Residenza Canali, Hotel Manfredi, or the Domini Townhouse? I appreciate any comments or suggestions as this is our first time going to Italy. Thank you.

We're going in July and are staying at the Hotel Quirinale--I recommend it. Go to Octopus.com--I found great rates and it included breakfast. We stayed at the hotel b4--u can WALK to it from Termini station--3 minutes if that.

The Manfredi is a fine hotel, small, on the third or fourth floor of an ancient building, quite close to the Spanish Steps.
The hotel has a nice decor, and had been redecorated/refurbished shortly before friends of mine were staying there. This was July, 2001.
My friends were very happy with the hotel, and I found the reception area to be very nice, with marble floors, and the staff overly friendly and attentive.

I haven't stayed here yet, but consider Hotel Julia and Domus Julia (right next to each other):

And read the reviews here on this forum.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Rome and Positano(9/14-9/24, 2004). We stayed at the Residenza Canali on Via dei Tre Archi in Rome. The rooms are small(like most in Europe) but clean and nice, as they have been renovated in the last few years. There are four floors but it does not have an elevator. My husband and I opted to carry our own bags, but they did offer to provide assistance if we wanted it. Our room (a regular double on the 3rd floor)was air-conditioned, however; it was not working properly. The hallway was quite cool and we heard no complaints from other guests so I believe that we were probably the only room with a problem. The staff was lovely and, although set-up in a small room, the complimentary breakfast was plentiful (cakes, rolls, 7 grain bread, fruit, yogurt, etc...). It is very close to the Piazza Navona where we enjoyed several lovely meals. The price was under $200 Euros per night and they offered a discount for paying in cash at the end. I would definitely recommend it for its proximity to the main sites and for the delightful staff.

Thank you everyone for the great information. My search continues. One other question: has anyone ever stayed at the Grand Palace Hotel or the Hotel Pantheon. The Grand Palace was recommended on another forum reply. I believe it is on Via Veneto and I was quoted under $200 per night.
And to my daughter-in-law, who is several states away, thank you for helping me look, and a big "HI" back at you. You made me laugh!

We resently stayed at the Cesari Hotel, which is just off the Piazza di Pietra, near the Parthenon. In August it cost 150 euros for a double but that goes up to 200 euros in Sept. The rooms were large and clean, the bathroom small but fairly up to date. One very nice feature was a computer for guests in the rear of the lobby, free of charge. The double windows really worked to keep out sound and light. The staff were nice and helpful. The breakfast room was too small for the number of guests but pleasant, with a lot of large windows. Buffet included hard boiled eggs, museli, etc., yogurt, fresh fruit that rarely was ripe [I finally took it to our room to ripen, then would bring it back down to eat at breakfast in a few days], cheese, so-so meat, pastries and though I didn't like the coffee that much they would bring me an espresso.

To answer your question, we have stayed at the Grand Hotel Palace several years ago and really enjoyed it. The lobby and breakfast rooms are spectacular, in fact on our last trip (while staying at the del Senato) we went back to the Palace just to sit in the lobby and take it all in. Our room was very nice, recently remodeled, interior courtyard view.
Under $200 sounds like a great price.
This hotel is in a very central location.

Thank you Road Warrior. One question - between the two hotels that you stayed at, which did you find to be better, as far as proximity to tourist sites, cafes, etc., via walking? Right now, I am deciding between the two you mentioned - Hotel Grand Palace and the del Senato. Thanks for replying.
