We're renting a garden cottage for a week in Linlithgow in Oct. We don't anticipate needing anything extra or special from the cottage owners. Is it customary to tip them? Have never done this kind of trip before, so have no idea. Thanks.

well, personally I wouldn't have a problem with our guests sticking £5s [or £10s] in my hot little hand, but we certainly don't expect it! honestly, you are NOT expected to tip the owners of the cottage, even if they do provide anything extra.
however, a nice note in the visitors' book, a thank you card, or, if they have provided something special, a bottle of wine, would be greatly appreciated I'm sure.

As for tipping..be on the lookout for this guy in your Scotland ventures. He's worth a little tip, don't you think!
Have a great time in that cottage...being close to Edinburgh is a bonus for a day trip.
