Scotney Castle or Great Dixter?

Sissinghurst is on our "must see" list.

However, between Scotney Castle and Great Dixter--which is the better one to see if you had to choose and couldn't see both? Are the gardens good in the summer at Great Dixter? Or better in the spring months?

Sheffield Park and Gardens--worth a detour enroute to Petworth House? or not?

Please help with some suggestions. Thanks.

I would definitely vote for Scotney Castle, although I do like Great Dixter. Although it depends what you are most interested in doing. Scotney Castle has beautiful gardens, very romantic and a really interesting house to visit. Great Dixter's charms are primarily the garden. Sheffield Park is impressive in the fall. Have never been a fan of Petworth. Hope you have a great trip.

Second vote for Scotney Castle. A wonderful place to spend the day.

You can't really go wrong with either one. Some of you questions re one property/site vs. another are basically unanswerable. One person's WOW is another's meh . . .

These two are both so lovely it is totally subjective which is 'better' .

Head to the one nearest to where you are on the day and then you might even be able to squeeze in both.

I agree it is all subjective. However, if the majority vote that it is a "wow" or a "meh" then that helps with the planning a little bit. Of course, if the opinions are split evenly that is another story.

When there are so many lovely places to choose from, the more opinions we can gather on the properties will help in the decision making process of which to see and which to save for another time.

I know we have to cut out some of the things on my list--just won't be enough time to do it all--things often take longer than you expect. So I am trying to sort the "top" place of the day and work around that. The problem with the southeast is that there are not only one or two things near by but plenty!
