Scotland: short trip, pinpointing sights of interest for itinerary
My boyfriend and I are going to Scotland for 3 full days (4 nights) end of May and June 1st. I have never been and am finding it hard to pick a small number of sights to see and where to sleep.
Here is what I was thinking:
May 29: arrival in Edinburgh, visit city, already booked B&B
May 30: rent a car, got to Stirling then maybe Doune, Loch Lomond, stay in Luss
May 31: drive to Glen Coe take a walk, drive to Aberfeldy then Crieff
June 1st: return to Edinburgh (B&B already booked) visit the city
I figured I had to see the city, I also would like to see some beautiful scenery and nice villages or ones with a great atmosphere. We don't want to drive too many hours per day.
We are already last minute, I haven't yet pinpointed the villages we will be staying in on the 30th and 31st, is it better to pinpoint as soon as possible and book B&B?
Thank you

That train ride is pretty good once you get to Durham and beyond.
1. Edinburgh is indeed a great city - as you have such limited time there you might do best to get a rover ticket on the tour buses.
2. I appreciate your desire not to travel too far in a day but even so I think there is much to be said for getting to Glencoe on your second day. Then on your third you could get a good walk in the area or go across the Corran ferry and round to Mallaig, returning to Glencoe via Fort William. i.e. you would have 2 nights in Glencoe.
3. As you are driving, you could take a different route back to Edinburgh.

davidx, I'm sorry, english is not my first language, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by " there is much to be said for getting to Glencoe on your second day"
If you could explain,
thank you

I'd personally skip Loch Lomond/Luss. Luss is a pretty village worth a few minutes (well maybe an hour if you stop for ice cream) but not worth an excursion on such a short visit.
I'd leave Edinburgh in the early AM, drive through the Trossachs stopping at any pretty viewpoints you see and end up at Glencoe for that night. See if there are rooms available at the Clachaig Inn http://www.clachaig.com/ If not, stay in Ballachulish or nearby on the 30th. Next morning explore some more and then head back towards Edinburgh take time to stop in Killin, and walk around some of the lochs/waterfalls along your route, stop at Doune or take the A85 instead and go via Crieff.
Then back to Edinburgh the last day.
You'd need to book rooms ASAP.

If no rooms at the Clachaig Inn (we had dinner there), you could stay at the Pineapple House B&B not far from it. I highly recommend it, such good hospitality, very clean and updated rooms, and great breakfast.

Skipping Loch Lomond and following Janisj's plan sounds much easier and doable for the four day trip.
