Scotland and the Inner Herbrides

I will be visiting Ireland and Scotland in late August and early September 2013. Am dividing my time between two land tours with 8 nights of independent travel. I will be ending the final tour in Glasgow with 2 1/2 days of independent travel before heading back to Dublin for return flight to NYC. I would really like to visit Iona, Islay and surrounding islands. Can someone suggest the best way to get there from Glasgow. I will be on my own. Should I rent a car at the airport and drive to Oban and take ferries to islands or chance a flight on Flybe airlines directly to Islay. Wish I had more time to spend but did not want to leave Scotland without going here. Also any recommendations for a place to stay.
Thank you.
Jodi from Florida
