Hello! I am in the planning stages for a trip this August to Scotland then Ireland. As always I have to ask questions of the Fodor's Forum for my trip! I have the flights booked into Edinburgh and out of Dublin to home - Toronto. I have tickets booked for the Military Tatoo in Edinburgh...but that is all so far. We will spend the first couple of days in Edinburgh exploring then after the Tatoo would like to spend 3--4 days exploring some parts of Scotland. But where do we go...and how do we go? We would like to do some type of walking tour? Then we would like to take a ferry to Ireland, and do some type of walking tour there? But what areas are best? Never been there before and this is a "retirement" trip... but we are in pretty good shape! Any suggestions would be appreciated. thank you!

just a few quick comments-
Make your hotel reservations in Edinburgh sooner rather than later.
There is no ferry from Scotland to Ireland - but there are ferries to Northern Ireland.
Scotland and Ireland are both large and there are MANY places that would be good for a few days. Maybe read some of the trip reports on here to get some ideas.
Do you want organized/group walking tours - or want to do them on your own?
Thank you for your reply and suggestions I just booked a hotel for the first three nights in Edinburgh. We will stay there and explore for three days then see the Tatoo. Then we were hoping to rent a car and head out to see some scenary and towns for 2 - 3 days? But looking for advice on which way to go? We would like in Scotland to drive by ourselves but really only have only 3 days..and would like to end the drive at the place to catch the Ferry to Northern Ireland. So any suggestions for the drive? In Ireland we would like spend a day ourselves in Dublin...but would like a walking tour... but which region?
