Mark, Tegernsee is a small lake with several villages on its shores. It is quiet and serene. I'll relate a true story: my uncle was a member of the 36th Div./US Army. In late April, 1945, he went on a raid on Heinrich Himmler's villa situated on Tegernsee. There was a rumor that Himmler might possibly have been there (he was not). My uncle still has several epaulets taken from Himmler's uniforms hanging in his villa. I retraced his route through Germany with uncle Jack in 1994. And we found Himmler's villa which is now a conference center. Very interesting. Jinx Hoover
Mark,
We stayed on the Tegernsee in April 2000. We stayed in the small town of Bad Wiessee on the west side of the lake. It has a water park, spa, indoor & outdoor tennis courts and a golf course. The town of Tegernsee also has the same amenities and is located on the east side of the lake along with Gmund, and Rottach-Egern. If you're going to take the train into Munich, it would probably be better to stay in Tegernsee, as the train only runs on the east side of the lake (we had a car). The lake is very pretty with boat rides or row boat rentals available. It's a one hour train ride from Tegernsee to Munich Hbf. A good place to stay if commuting into Munich.
Jinx and Tom,
Thanks for the info. I will stay in Tegernsee since we will be coming by train. Any hotel thoughts for the town?
Are there many hotels available in Tegernsee?
I figure I'll set up in Tegernsee as my final base for the day long visit to the beer tents at the O'fest.
I am going with a bunch of people that are into the whole Nazi thing, so to be in the town that Himmler almost got it, will just add more interest to the 14 day trip.
Thanks again!
Mark
Mark,
Go to www.tegernsee.de
This site is in German but you can get a feel for the area and if you click on tourismus and then prospektservice you can send a request for hotel info etc. They have listings in all price ranges, everything from pricey hotels to B&B's to rooms in private homes.Their info will include a map of the town, and almost anywhere you stay will be within walking distance of the train station.
Have fun
Depending on your budget, you may want to look at the Bachmair (or Bachmayer??) in Rottach-Egern. Nice "exlcusive" resort-type place, with a great restaurant. There are several "nice" hotels in R-E.
I really liked Rottach-Egern and the Seehotel Uberfahrt on the lake. It would be classified as a 4 star hotel. And there was a great oompah band concert in the little gazebo on the lake shore the next day, not far from the hotel.
Mark, we were on the eastern side of the Tegernsee--either at Gmund or at Tegernsee when we found Himmler's villa (now a conference center). Another sidelight to the story: a sergeant who was on the raid took an armload of Himmler's uniforms and other loot. He piled this in a Mercedes he had "confiscated" and took off to visit his girl friend back in the Heidelberg area. Got drunk on the way and ran the Mercedes off into another lake! Lost the car and all the loot! War has strange twists. Jinx Hoover
Bookmarking. Some interesting history here concerning Himmler's Villa.
