I have a reservation for the Scavi Tour. My understanding was that you would be able to enter St. Peter's Basilica immediately after the tour without having to wait in line. But I also understand that you are not allowed to bring cameras on the Scavi Tour. But I would want my camera with me while in St. Peters. Will they really not allow any cameras on the Scavi tour (and not take any pictures during the tour) so that I can have it with me for the basilica afterwards?

I have done the Scavi tour. I carried my camera with me. The prohibition is PHOTOGRAPHY, that is TAKING pictures, and not bringing cameras. You can read the actual wordings at the official site:

The bag rule is enforced. Once you are in the necropolis, you know why. It is very tight. It is difficult have anything on you back and be able to pass through tight places.
They really won't allow pictures and since there are only 12 people on a tour they will know if you attempt to break the rule. You may get escorted out if you do.
If you have a small messenger type bag across your body, you can take it in (mine was a purse big enough for a camera and small video camera and it was no problem), but I didn't see anyone with backpacks.
If you check your bag, it's on the opposite side of St. Peter's from the scavi office. The Scavi office is #28 and the bag check is #22.

Yes you can bring your camera with you, but absolutely no photography or video is allowed.

Do they tell you to bring passports or proof of age for the tour? My son will miss being 15 years old by 5 days. Do you all think we can get him in, or would they make my son not go through the tour? Thanks for your tips. Roxanne
