sassi in Matera

Has anyone stayed at Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in Matera? My husband and I have booked two nights there in May. It is a bit pricey, and we want to make sure it's worth the money. We selected it because we can park there and don't have to drag our luggage up stairs. Any information is appreciated.

Kristina, who posts here, has stayed there.

There are other cave hotels in the city; we stayed at one of these, Locanda di San Martino.

While it is much less expensive than the Sextantio, it did not have the astounding view. Details here:

jtmsi,

We stayed 2 nights at Sextantio Le Grotte in June, 2013 and would recommend the hotel to really get the feel of Matera. The hotel prides itself on preserving the authencity of Matera as much as possible and it shows. An experience you will not forget! Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes for outdoors as well as in the room.
We booked a tour with Nadia Garlatti the first day and glad we did. Her knowledge of the history and their way of life was so valuable.
I wished I had read "Christ stopped at Eboli" before our visit. Seeing Carlos Levi's paintings in the museum was a great way to end the our visit.

Thanks for the links, ekscrunchy. I'll check them out. Plufmud, do you have the contact information for Nadia Garlatti? I just got Christ Stopped at Eboli and will make sure to read it before we leave.

Contact for Nadia. She is very passionate about Matera as she lives there and works with the UNESCO foundation. Be sure to end your trip with the museum that houses the mural painting~very moving!
