Sardinia vs. Sicily
Hello,
It is almost 3am and I have combed thru a ton of Sardinia and Sicily posts (along with Corsica and Naxos). I am really torn between the four places. We will be travelling with 2 kids - 2 yr toddler, and 1 newborn infant (crazy I know)! Anyone been to all 4 places and can do a comparison?
We have been to France (all over), Italy (all over) but not Greece. Though I am shying away from Greece because the overall travel time. Are the beaches in the Medi nicer than the Carribbean (like Anguilla)?

I'll answer the last part first. I think the actual beaches of the Carribean and far nicer than the actual beaches of the Mediterranean, including Greece. But then rarely do you have things in the Carribean like a wonderful Greek taverna with music playing and ouzo flowing.
I've not been to Naxos, but have been to six other Greek islands. Other than the spectacular site of the caldera at Santorini, I think most of the Greek islands are mainly great if you want to sit, relax, and do nothing.
I liked Sardinia better than Corsica, and I like Sicily better than Sardinia. But then I don't go for the beaches -- I'm more into the architecture, the natural beauty, the food, and the overall ambiance.
On the other hand, I suspect with the toddler and newborn, you aren't planning on doing a lot except trying to relax. But I can't see the cost of going that far if your main desire is to sit on a beach. I'd frankly stick to the Carribean, which I assume is much closer for you.

I have been to Sardinia and Sicily fairly recently with small children. I have also been to Naxos though it was ages ago...way before the kinder.
As far as Sardinia and Sicily go, it depends on when you are going. The beaches in Sardinia are far nicer than the ones in Sicily. The water is clean, gentle and beautiful with a long shelf...perfect for kids. But the island has a short season and if you are off season or even shoulder season, a lot of places are closed. Sicily is more of a year round place. It is like Italy, only more so. Food is fabulous, drivers are a bit crazy and there is a lot more obvious poverty.
Both islands have their attributes and the above is only my opinion.

Thanks for the replies. The beach is really for the 2 yr toddler. But he can't tell the difference between a beach in NJ from a beach in Anguilla. They are all the same to him. We love Europe for exactly the reasons you mentioned (NeoPatrick) food, ambiance, culture and architecture. And take almost all our vacations there. We are planning to go this September (!) which I have read is a good time to go. SloJan2, do you have suggestions about where to stay (hotel/rental agencies) and an itinerary for both places? My concern with Sicily is that with so much to see, we will try to do everything. First time traveling with 2 kids so I'm not sure what our limitations will be. Love to here your thoughts.
