Sardenia and Sicily - advice or recommendations?

I am travelling to Sicily and then on to Sardenia in October and I would appreciate any comments or advice generally, and on accommodation etc. The plan is to spend seven days on Lipari with trips to other Eolie Islands and then 3-4 days on Sicily, departing Palermo for Sardenia. We have 15 days on Sardenia, arriving in Cagliari and departing from Alghero with possible car hire in between. Any suggestions or must sees?

I spent 16 days in Sicily in April and actually loved it .It was my first vist there but I have family there .
The towns are beautiful Palermo is ok , butt my family is from Corleone. and I loved it also travel to Erice .its worth it. I leave on aug 23 5 days in Roma and 5 days in Sardenia . I will let you know but unfortunately I would probably spend more time traveling around Sicilia. Go to Campo San Vito . Small town but beautiful .
Good luck

I would recommend as much time on Sicily as possible! There have been several recent threads on Sicily - do a search.

I have a couple of comments:

1. While October is often not a bad month to visit the Aeolian Islands, you must be prepared for some bad weather and the possibility that the hydrofoils might be delayed or even cancelled. Lipari town is a pure delight, and the National Archeological Museum can occupy the better part of rainy day.

2. You will be taking a hydrofoil or a car ferry to Milazzo, then proceeding by train to Palermo. I suggest that you stop in Cefalu to visit the magnificent Normal Cathedral with its Byzantine mosaics. Then compare this to the Cathedral in Monreale and the Cappella Palatina in the Palazzo dei Normanni in Palermo. You can easily spend three full days in Palermo proper. You don't need to rent a car on Sicily, based on your itinerary above.

3. Beware that the overnight ferry from Palermo to Cagliari operates only once per week. If you want a cabin, you should book at least one week in advance. Otherwise, there are reclining seats. You can get full information from the website:
www.tirrenia.it

4. A car hire on Sardinia is very useful, particularly to see all the sites outside of the main towns. I highly recommend seeing Villasimius, the Costa Rei, Pula, Nora, Santa Margherita di Pula, Chia Laguna and the Costa del Sud. On the western side of the Island, the Costa Verde and the Sinis Peninsula are beautiful. The ruins at Tharros are intriguing, and the town of Bosa quite appealing. The coastline from Bosa to Alghero is stunning. Alghero itself is exceedingly charming, worth a three-day stay. On the northern coastline, Castelsardo is quite beautiful. Try to see some of the lovely churches scattered in the countryside around Sassari, SS. Trinita di Saccargia being the most lovely. Any other questions?

Public transportation is not very well organized in Sardinia, even more so off season. A car is absolutely necessary.

Unless your aim is merely to see Cagliari, Pula/Nora Sassari/Castelsardo and Alghero.
