Santorini transportation

We're visiting Santorini in June and was wondering if it is necessary to rent a car to visit the Island or if buses are the best option. We're staying in Fira and we are going to be in Santorini for 4 days.

No doubt a hire car would be more convenient, but the bus system on Santorini is quiet good, with Fira the hub for the island. I look on my trips to the Greek Islands as a chance to get away from the routine of life. I do enough driving at home, and when on the islands prefer to walk or use public transport. I will admit there are a few places too far to walk and without bus service I haven't seen, though.

You could wait until you are on Santorini to make that decision — I doubt all the hire cars will be fully booked in June.

We've done both, we hired a car for one day and drove all over the island. A day or toe later we wanted to go back to the beaches and caught a local bus. Both were easy. In fact for us Santorini was a great place for getting the hang of having everything opposite from what were are used to before we drove in busier places.

I think that booking a car is the best option. You are independent and you don't have to worry about the bus. You can rent a car in Fira for about 20€~25€ per day. I had used www.carantee.com and it was cheap and reliable.

Thank you for the input. We orobably rent a car for a day or 2 to visit whatever we want. Is parking easy to find? One last question, do I need an international permit? I have a driver's license from the USA.

You definitely need an IDP if you have a US driver's license:

"Tourists and temporary residents who will stay in Greece for fewer than 185 days and plan to drive, must carry a valid U.S. license as well as an international driver's permit (IDP). Failure to have both documents may result in police detention or other problems."

See http://travel.state.gov/content/pass...ry/greece.html (click the Travel & Transportation tab).

Pick up an IDP at your local AAA office, no test or membership required. Bring 2 passport photos with you to save a few dollars.

"Where to stay" suggestions without knowing what sort of holiday you want will be all over the place. If you provide some information that addresses your travel style it would go a long way. Do more research. TripAdvisor has a lot of contributors with lots of experience specifically for Santorini. And if you want hotel recommendations we need to know which village you've chosen, your travel dates and your maximum daily room budget, expressed in EURO.

We rented a little 4-wheeler for a day or two when we were on Santorini and really enjoyed it and then walked the rest of the time.

Hello, everyone!
I'm going to Athens and then to Santorini next week. I'm going by ferry from Athens to Fira. I'm planning to stay at Kamari Beach. My questions:
- When I get out of the ferry in Santorini, are there any buses to Kamari nearby?
- Do you know the price for a taxi ride from Fira to Kamari?
- Any recommendation for an hotel by the beach in Kamari? Not very expensive but nice.
Thank you
