Santorini: Last Minute Rooms in Sept in Oia Possible?

We won't know which night we will be in Santorini until about 3 days before. It will probably be Thursday September 19. Is it possible to get two rooms in Oia at the last minute? View is not required. Price: about $200 US. We would like to be close to the view (maybe 1 km or so) but do not need to have the view from our hotel. Will all the hotels be filled up at that time of year?

I have noticed on the hotel booking sites they require payment several weeks in advance, non-refundable. We don't want to end up in a hotel on the other side of the island. And really want Oia, not Fira.

Thanks.

IMO you have been looking at the wrong "hotel sites."

I would not bother with any booking sites and prepayment. If the hotel is available there is no issue with last minute bookings. Book direct, arrive tomorrow, pay on arrival (or however the owner tells you they want payment). There is no need to be 1km from the view either. Alot of accommodation in Oia are village rooms/apartments with 2 bedrooms. Are you only going for 1 night?

You can search booking.com village by village to make sure your hotel is in Oia. If you don't want to book in advance and you are arriving by ferry there are room-finder businesses at the ferry port. Or you can take the port bus into Fira and then take the next bus to Oia, and try the Ecorama Holidays office in the Oia bus square.

Thanks for all your helpful resonspes. My biggest question is....how packed is it on Sept 19? Aren't we approaching the off-season? So there will likely be vacancies?

I have been looking at Booking.com/santorini and hotels.com everything I choose requires payment by Sept 5 at the latest for arrival on Sept 19. I will try some hotels directly and also try lastminutetravel.com.

More than you wanted to know but...we will arrive to Santorini by air from Athens, which will also need to be booked last minute. We will only be in Santorini one night. We are attending a baptism in Athens and have an apartment rented with other family members for one week. Four of us will sneak away to Santorini for two days/one night. Three out of four of us going to Santorini are flying standby to Athens from the US, so I don't have any assurance they will actually arrive in Athens at all, let alone on a particular day. Thus my situation.

Yes, you're approaching the off-season. Yes, there will be vacancies, but without reservations you will be spending a lot of time and energy finding available rooms. I don't think there's a room-finder business at the airport so your best chance to do so is in Oia, either at the Ecorama Holidays office or by going door-to-door. Another option: Sincey you're in Athens beforehand you can call some hotels at the last minute from there to ask about availability. Island code: 22860

For this situation I would book direct. Check on the booking sites for places that are interesting for you to stay and check availability, when you are ready to book it, even the day before or on the day of arrival, call the property. Many are flexible with payment; for instance, where we stayed, they requested cash. Although we had the cash, we couldn't track down the owners until the day we were due to depart. Even though we booked 6 months in advance, they didn't want a deposit.
