Olympic has just changed the time of their flight from Santorini to Athens, thus making it impossible for us to arrive in Athens in time to catch our ongoing flight to Istanbul. Flights earlier in the day are booked on both airlines covering the route; we are being waitlisted by agent in Athens. SO: We may need to travel Santorini-Athens by ferry in order to catch evening flight to Istanbul. I would be grateful if anyone might have the time schedule for the Santorini-Athens ferry on Monday 3 October. It seems that those on the internet are subject to change with frequency. What is the procedure for the ferries? Do we need tickets in advance? How long is the trip? Anything else we should know about travbeling by ferry? And how long in time by taxi to the airport from Piraeus ferry dock? Our flight to Istanbul leaves Athens 6:45PM on that Monday.

It's always best to allow a night near Athens or Pireas after visiting islands. There are so many uncertainties, including the weather. Lots of people visit the islands for a weekend, either city people who want a break, or people who work or study in the city but have families in the islands.
The main operators for Santorini are Blue Star Ferries (www.bluestarferries.com) who have the BLUE STAR PAROS leaving at 1530 and getting to Pireas at 2255, and Hellenic Seaways (www.hellenicseaways.gr) who have the fast catamaran HIGHSPEED 3 leaving on Sunday at 1815 and reaching Pireas at 2355.
Have you checked with Aegean Airlines? The also have flights to and from Santorini. They're also cheaper, and more reliable by far.

According to www.gtp.gr there's only one ferry from Santorini on October 3, departing at 3:30 pm and arriving at Piraeus about 11:00 pm. You'll have to change your plans and leave Santorini the day before, October 2. There are 3 on that day leaving at various times, the one leaving at 7:15 am being the most convenient as far as arriving back in Athens/Piraeus. The Highspeed Hellas ferry doesn't run on Monday, so if you want that one you'll have to take it on Sunday as well.
Booking ahead on the ferry in October isn't at all necessary unless you want a sleeping cabin for the night boat. It won't be crowded.
Taxi time from Piraeus to the airport will depend on traffic and the time of day, but in general I'd allow an hour. You can also take the Metro into Athens and transfer to another out to the airport.
Thanks! We were hoping to avoid having to stay in Athens Sunday night, since we are alredy booked at our Santorini hotel that night. We are now on the waiting list for Aegean's Monday flight, according to the agent we are using in Athens, Fantasy Travel. Otherwise it looks like a Sunday ferry will be our only recourse.
Fantasy Travel has an excellent reputation. They'll be sure to get your reservation if it's at all possible.
I am so glad you mentioned their reputation...at least we will have the best shot at getting on one of the flights.....I am beginning to get really anxious!
